It's like with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Just because Abraham Lincoln isn't real, doesn't mean vampires aren't.

It also was pretty good about the Ophanim! Wheels of living fire and all that.

The school knew what they were and weren’t getting when they hired Robin. Book learning is a nice bonus compared to other intangibles she brings to the table, like brand name, GOP donors, political diversity, etc.

I....Look, Joyce, someone wrote the thing down. Sometimes they wrote about real people. Jason making sure Robin is getting some actual teaching done.

@Dan Rabin: Great catch on Becky's look (point #5). Coming soon from Marvel Studios: "Atheist All Along"

Dorothy: I have terrible news about Augustus Caesar, Joyce. Joyce: NOOOOOO

A touch-base strip for sure, but let's count the relationships the author has touched base with in this single strip: 1. Robin wings it with her lectures; Jason shepherds things into being a course. He has to lean into panel 1 to do his bit. Robin pushes back, but doesn't shut him down in panel 2; 2. New Sarah wants to study with Joyce; 3. Roz looks dead inside, despite being sex advisor to both members of Clark 3's hottest new couple; 4. Joyce has a gang on her left, and Dorothy on her immediate right. Becky is a Roz and a Sarah away from Joyce; 5. Becky looks serious, what with Robin having just broached the LGBT-in-politics thing that Becky lived through; 6. Joyce sees the continuity between her learning styles before and during college; 7. Joyce still hasn't figured out how her reactive atheism relates to Dorothy's all-along atheism. She brings her feelings about her personal journey into a realm where objectivity is a better guide, and she's just learning to do that. 8. Joyce has been reading up on Old Testament historicity, and she stares thoughtfully straight ahead while she talks about it. There are five speaking roles and two significantly-silent characters in this strip, yet it doesn't feel crowded. Note that the Robin/Jason interaction and the Joyce interactions are really two separate strips, with Robin's dismissal of the class setting up the pivot. The previous strip had a joke to tell and was sequenced appropriately for that task; and so also the present strip has a different job and uses different techniques.

Look, Joyce, just think of the Bible as the Iron Age version of The Crown. Just because Peter Morgan & company made some things up, it doesn't mean Elizabeth II and family didn't exist!

Joyce's use of "renounced" here reminds me that I would love to eventually see a strip in which Dina thanks Joyce for her belated birthday present.

The Book of Kings is actually a quite interesting and useful, if only mildy accurate, history of a time period with not a lot of other written records.

Jonathan Weisberg

Joyce: I’m totally not like Robin. Dorothy: of course you’re not. You aren’t a former politician. Joyce: yes, that’s what I meant. I also don’t have pictures of that blonde actress. Dorothy: my hair’s blonde.

Andrea Andrew

I’ll grant that the Bible got Iron-Age humans and Cherubim right

Magic Chopstick Games

Joyce: "Next you'll be telling me that sometimes laundry is just laundry." Dorothy: "Well... yes, it is." Joyce: "Okay, 'woman-whom-I-definitely-don't-want-to-bone'. " Dorothy: "What?" Joyce: "What?"
