Heh. Sarah is discovering that humans are very visual creatures. You can get away with saying bitter and cynical stuff - people will notice that you're usually right, or find you kind of darkly amusing. But if you scowl all the time, people will get actively miserable, negative feelings from you, and write you off as a misery-guts. So if holding that smile isn't too much strain in itself, she can indulge her authentic disgust at the universe verbally, and the group will just treat her as their token dark-toned cynic (without her being as much of a jerk about it as Mike). Bonus points if she lands a few home truths on certain other characters while smiling sweetly. And for now, she can teach Joyce that if a situation is complicated and difficult and an emotional minefield, you don't have to blather on about it. Just keep quiet and nobody will think badly of you.

2024-10-11 04:41:42 +0000 UTCWe like this comic because, in the middle of a sitcom caper thread, we can have a dimly-lit room with a window image showing that it's late afternoon with a scene-setting initial borderless panel and a subsequent Joyce-focus borderless panel with the strip as a whole developing both Joyce's wanting to behave appropriately towards Carla and Sarah's current smile-smile revolution, while calling back to the gang's traumatic captivity in the basement, and leaving us to ponder that "not not working" and "working" have different practical connotations. No thread in DoA is ever *not* any of the other threads. If you want there to be only one ball in the air at a time, there are sports you can watch—may I suggest golf?

(I agree with Dan Rabin's earlier speculation that the fact that A-G is in charge today is going to be crucial to resolving the Dina/Charlie situation.)
