THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (EXTENDED): Full Length Reaction!

Here's the full length reaction for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King! Get ready for a LOT of tears, especially in the last third of the movie. Which of the LOTR films is your favorite? I honestly don't know if I can choose... I like each one of them for different reasons. I'm very sad that it's over, but I'm already looking forward to watching the films again! Enjoy!

Gandalf's staff was broken in the extended version but not the theatrical version. Then, later Gandalf has his staff back, when boarding the ships for the undying land, because that scene was shot for the theatrical version, where his staff was never broken.

The first time you see Smeagal in this, he looks like Ozzy Osbourne. It tracks.

Same I read the books once a year as well

I read the books (The Hobbit + the trilogy) nearly a half century ago while in high school. Didn't retain much, except a few names and some context. I remember using LOR character names for my D&D characters while playing D&D in high school in the late 70s/early 80s. Then, I watched the LOR trilogy movies each once in the theater in the early 2000s. Stunning. For Two Towers, saw it at midnight with a friend, and was blown away by the battle scenes. Then, I watched bits and pieces of the movies when I bought the DVDs for my kids in the late 2000s. But that's it. Fast forward to this year (2023), I streamed the trilogy 3 times and now realize how truly good these movies are. "I go to my fathers in whose mighty company, I shall not now feel ashamed." Giving up immortality and thus die in a few short decades seems too drastic to me, no matter the circumstances.

I love how annoyed you got with Denethor for speaking to Faramir like he did. I'm not sure if you have read the books yet, but there was a reason why he was like that. Time gets compressed in the movies, for instance it felt sudden that Faramir and Eowyn formed a relationship, but it was over many days of recuperation. Overall I have loved your reaction to these movies. Next up, The Hobbit.

It’s funny you wonder if itll have the same emotional impact if you watch it again. All I can say is if anything you’ll get more emotional during other scenes when you know how it goes. For instance the Council of Elrond when Frodo stands and says “I will take the ring to Mordor” knowing the ultimate journey and what that journey will do to him gets me, especially because he knows what he’s signing up for, he was just stabbed and almost died and just heard Boromir explain that Mordor is an impenetrable hell. Yet he still stood up, a simple Hobbit and took all that weight on his shoulders. First time I seen the movies it was a cool scene but not super emotional and now it makes me tear up.

This film has a perfect three-stage conclusion, and the tears start in my eyes the moment Aragorn sees Arwen and they don't stop until I see Frodo turn and we see his face light up for the first time since he was stabbed at Weathertop. There is a reason that no film has ever earned more Academy Awards than this one. (Only two have matched it, and I recommend those as well - Ben Hur (1959) and Titanic (1997) ), Thanks for sharing! One thing, perhaps it was my system, but it looked like your video feed was slightly sped up at times. Not sure.

As great as these movies are I really am truly curious as to your thoughts on the novels. I'd love to have a discussion with you on them after you read them.

My favorite is The Two Towers but all three work together perfectly. I've been binging these films since I was 10

I watch the trilogy at least once a year, sometimes more.
