I think its pretty clear what Ed was expecting with his dad: a worthless deadbeat. Thats how heโs portrayed him in his mind for the last 10 tears, and even how the show portrayed him for the first half since it was being played out from Eds perspective. Heโs been hating his dad for so long that the only thing he could imagine was him being absolutely despicable. Finding out that heโs a man that does care about his family and regrets that he had to leave them is really throwing him off.
