brilliant discussion! I watched this in the cinema and haven't been able to bring myself to watch again, even though I badly want to. it affected me THAT much. to me it is the perfect analog to the experience of grief. (this pod also reminded me i want to rewatch It Follows!) edit: when you said Lake Mungo at the very end - gosh, I haven't heard anyone outside of Australia ever mention this film! another that has stayed under my skin for years.

new patreon here so listening to a few pods. I recently moved and I got a hand written note too! It started with "To our new neighbour" and the segment you read out was very similar to what I got too... I wonder if they watch property sales in their area too, because unless they saw me literally move in they'd have no idea surely? I didn't have the RTS issue with mail either. I find them very unusual however when I lived in Ipswich there was an odd amount of Mormons and JW (had never met a Mormon until living there at least). The JW can be handy when they hand out those JW umbrellas when it rains. The amount of times they've saved me on the way to work lol... EDIT: If you haven't done the horror movie rec pod/video yet (I'll have to check) then please do! Love horror films so that'll be right up my alley

I listened to this ep when it first came out but noticed I had about 15 minutes I hadn’t listened to, so while I’m getting ready this morning I thought I would finish it. My friend Frankie and I are horror fanatics and last year throughout lockdown we put together a list of 30 films over 30 days with different themes, monsters, foreign, mindless gore etc anyway, one of her picks was Possom so I gave it a watch and I’ve never hated a film more. I don’t know if having a visceral reaction makes it a “good” film but it makes me cringe! Happy Halloween anyway! Can’t wait to see the lewks 🤍🖤

Very late to this pod, but as an ex Jehovah’s Witness it is such a crazy ‘religion’ my mam was cut off from lifelong friends when she left. The creepy handwritten letters are so strange they must be getting desperate for new members !

The irony is that I don’t actually have much to say for this one. I think you both covered everything I thought about it as you chatted. Try not to be too hard on my Dad, he just had a terrible sense of humour and was always genuinely upset when he realised how much he scared people and stopped doing it. We all found it funny fairly soon after the pranks 😅. The embarrassment of being dragged for my comment length in front of Nova, I’m mortified 😂😂

As far as Hereditary... I saw this in the theater with my oldest daughter (who was an adult already). She grew up with a special needs sibling that required her to grow up quickly, but it also made the scene when the siblings are rushing to the hospital so poignant. Her brother has a lot of food restrictions, and he has seizures when he has them, so when Peter allows Charlie to be on her own and she makes an unfortunate food choice, thus closing her airway from the allergic reaction, that was already a panic for us. I NEVER saw what came next. Usually, horror movies are somewhat predictable, but because we were thinking about my middle child and his special needs, we were submerged in the sadness of Charlie's life being in the balance. When her head was smashed off, I (who can watch the most gruesome violence without so much as flinching) gripped the arms of the chair and felt genuine shock and horror. I imagined it happening to my own child in distress, and when Toni Collette let out that Primal scream in her bedroom, I felt it to my core and began to cry in the movie theater. my daughter was speechless and crushed. Never expected a movie to affect us the way this one did.

Love the Hellraiser franchise. It becomes campy over time, but the concept and execution of the first one is so good. As a serious horror fan, I consider it a classic (like Phantasm or Puppet Master).
