Preview of a New Test Video

So this isn't ready for prime time on the channel but I thought I would let all you patreon folks get a chance to see what kinds of new content we are working on. 360 video has some very interesting possibilities but I am not happy with the quality of the video and the audio yet. What do you think?

Better low quality with bad sound than NOT being able to have a look around for myself especially in a tour setting like that. Great application of the tech...go with it.

Dustin Pierson

Wow, my mind is blown. That was really neat, great tour feel. I know a lot of rooms in historic locations are off limits, if someone did this in every one people wouldn't be missing out. I'm not a very good millennial, this tech leaves me dumbfounded. Neat.

I think 360 vid is a wonderful novelty, but I think the state of the technology just isn't there yet for many applications. It forces the total resolution to be divided among the entire view. So under 1080p resolution, any one perspective is pretty low-res. I think it's something that has fantastic potential for documenting historic buildings, but we'll be stuck waiting a few years before things get really good. In particular, I would've loved a closeup shot of the wallpaper. I'd always thought that wallpaper was the most boring thing ever until a historian forced me to consider just how difficult it would've been to produce some of the finer wallpaper in existence in the 18th century, while using 18th century technology. Then you see what a technology push it was, both in expensive upper-class decorations, and in making previously expensive techniques more affordable, so as to increase sales. I never in my life thought that something so at-first-glance boring be so mind-blowing. That's a big part of what I love in exploring history. I love that you're trying experiments like this, and this is honestly one of the best applications for 360 video I've seen so far online. If you haven't yet, you might want to take a look at veritasium's thoughts on 360 video. I don't agree with all of his conclusions, and I think he goes unusually negative in this video, but he's one of the cutting-edge youtubers who has some good insights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrYZlkyjWsg I think in the future, 360 video will be used to capture everything, and then after the fact, the editor can direct the video, showing us what we should look at, and there is no concern of missing any action, just because the camera man happens to be pointing the wrong way at the wrong time....but I digress.

Paul Grodt

Yeah, that's a thing with those 360 cameras. They've only just started to come out with great 360 mics that go along with, but man, they are expensive. Even with standard mics, it's _super_ tricky to record in 18th century American homes. the hardwood floors and bare walls make them SUPER live; sound bounces everywhere unless you sneak it a bunch of blankets and acoustic panels to deaden everything, or use very directional boom mics (requiring a boom-operator).

Paul Grodt

Very cool!

Really cool idea, I'd love to see more videos like that! :) Audio could be a bit clearer, though.

Dominik Baumer

Very cool.. Took me a moment to realize I could move the view around the room.

Carl Johnson

It's interesting, but to really watch it I need to haul out my Google Cardboard and open it on my phone, which is not where I usually watch videos. It's certainly less convenient to watch. That said, getting an occasional immersive look at a space can be fun.

Domenico Bettinelli

I liked seeing the whole room, but wish you could have switched to a normal camera for looking at the collections. The 360 view is great for an overview but is disturbing after a while (the walls all look like half circles) and you don't get any detail. Audio quality was fine.

Robin McGann

Yes we were only using the mic built into the camera with is always a recipe for bad audio.

Jon Townsend

I had a problem with the audio. My hearing isn't that great,so I blame it on that, but there seemed to be a lot of "Echoey" quality to it.

Winfield E. Johnson

The audio could be a little better, but your voices are clear, I can understand what you are saying without strain. So I'm not sure you need to worry about the audio too much. The video quality suffers a bit, but not unexpected with 360 cameras, I've watched way worse quality videos. However, I would like to say this. 360 video is great now and again to get the sense of a place, but please please don't start putting it in everything. I've seen a lot of cooking shows try 360 video and it's been just about awful every time. If you want to give a sense of a place, like a historical site, doing a short 360 video is great. But if you are going to try to do anything people might want to follow, like an interview or a recipe or a craft of some form, it's actually currently a very BAD format for that. Thanks as always John!

Ross Ramsay

Certainly great to watch, but I don't think 360 is here quite yet. Video quality lacks greatly, and this is something where visual detail is key I think. Maybe 360 will grow up in a few years, but it's just not there yet in my opinion. Very informative video none the less :)

Eddy Gurge

Hi Jon - I watched the video using the Google Daydream VR and agree that while the image quality isn't great, you do get quite an immersive experience which was good. If you can get a higher resolution on the camera that would be great.

Paul Carey

I know the quality isn't where you want it to be but I really like being able to look around the room. Really immersive. I think it would be even cooler with one of those VR headsets.

Zach Crawford

Really interesting video! I do like being able to look around the room that you are in and if someone is pointing out something you can turn the video to look right at it. Although I can sympathise with the quality of the audio and video. I think both of those might be solvable with some more tinkering. Either way great job so far! Would love to see videos like these. It's very useful if you can see all around a place you can't visit easily.

Labarbecque

love it, i can see the 360 videos helping people get a real sense of the places.

This is amazing! Nice work. I hope to see more of these kinds of videos. It's really neat to be able to move around and explore the space.
