Don't Ruin the Magic!

I don't think this video will ruin any magic, but if you are bored by tech talk and equipment info then this video is not for you. I love it and could jabber on for hours. Thankfully I squeezed it down to 15 minutes for you ( I scrapped the 45-minute version). My nickname must be "longwinded".  Thank you for being here and supporting what we do!

I really enjoyed seeing the equipment, not boring at at all & it didn’t ruin the magic, it enhanced it! I do remember the brick clay go pro shot! Great shot and it is amazing the go pro survived. Thanks for these fun little patreon videos.

Lane Andress

Thank you so much? My daughter and I are starting a channel

Wendy Carr

This was extremely interesting and heartfelt! Doesn’t take away any of the magic at all, just enhances it!

Brigit, its not (as Jon points out) the price of your "tools" - YES high end professional will make it easier. But if you have a great idea and it comes from your HEART - you can get by with lower end equipment. Jon points out using Zoom products for audio - PERFECT. And a Go Pro would get you by nicely. I want to say GO for it. And you can get reasonably priced editing software. It does not have to be Avid - although that is the standard of the industry. You do need to learn to use editing software. Some sources for equipment are B&H (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/ ) and audio at sweetwater (https://www.sweetwater.com/) BOTH will treat you like a queen, and answer your questions. REALLY good folks. Research on the net and find BOOKS (real paper with print books) - and get out your highlighter and sticky note tabs. Don't try and technically re-invent the wheel. Also - REALLY look with a technical eye at Jon's videos. You are seeing what CAN be done and so FEW do! I've been in music production professionally since the late 1980's and most of what is heard today is pretty much garbage (at least technically speaking) The SAME with video so I would encourage you- do your research - find a book(s) that are used as texts for course material. Don't go by much of what you see today for video's (Youtube) (OR audio!!!) "Streaming" yuch. - you will learn a thousand ways to do it WRONG! Get out there and find your heart! And as Jon says - you can do some pretty amazing things with just an iPhone camera!! Let me know what you think! )))HUGGS(((

I get you Jon, Zoom DOES make excellent audio equipment. Their little stereo audio recorder is pretty much industry standard. 32 bit float is really really excellent! Most songs today are recorded at 24bit float and 96k. The kitty ate the cable! Oh no! As MUCH as I would love to have a kitty - I have 100's of nice chewy XLR and other cables - so here I am - no kitty. Fix it in post! Its like how the Traveling Willbury's got their name (You HAVE to listen to the Traveling Willburys! Tom Petty,George Harrison, Jim Keltner, Bob Dylan , ROY ORBISON, Jeff Lynn) "We'll BURY it in the mix!" Editing and post prod is where it ALL comes together. HOWEVER it is EXACTLY what you said: Just like a song "It has to start up here" In audio we say garbage in = garbage out. It HAS to start from the brain and from the HEART. YOU start from the heart and it SHOWS. Frankly and you and I know it - you ARE going to degrade through youtube. The audio gets compressed as does the video. Professional sound and video files are uncompressed and huge. Aaron has beautiful ART to start with and can then edit and mix down from THAT standpoint. Just like a band or a soloist not being able to sing (I detest/despise autotune) or play their instrument - or the song is just awful - you can't bury it in the mix. YES quality high end equipment gives you the tools you need to create art - if its garbage in its going to be garbage out. The tag line for my studio is Highlands Recording Arts - where the mix becomes the art. Jon you, Aaron and everyone keep creating ART! The world thirsts for it. SO sorry the kitty ate your high end mic :-p God Bless.... Cyn

With some experimentation you can do some pretty amazing stuff with a cell phone. A lot of very successful channels don't use anything more.

Jon Townsend

That was actually pretty interesting, Jon. Been thinking about starting up a YouTube channel. Doubt I could afford that stuff--but still interesting to hear about.
