New Series Concept Help

I am thinking about a simple video series concept for the Townsends Journal channel. What do you think of short videos answering questions posed by Patreon supporters? Please jump into the comments if you are interested in the concept or if you have ideas about particular questions.

Thank you for your support!

I think it’s a great idea and it will let more people know that you have a Patreon. I’ve found that most people think patreon is just a pass the hat system.

As someone who would watch a video of you reading the phone book: I think this is a great idea. There are tons of little things here and there I've seen from your videos I'd love to hear more about.

Michael Everett

This is a great chance to answer some of the best questions left in the comments of your regular videos. Most of us don't have the time to catch up on all of the comments left by others. So I guess that would be like the old Q&A videos, which were great.

If you're looking for questions, I've got one. How were clothes & bed linens made back then? I knew a volunteer at Williamsburg who showed me how they made men's shirts & I know your store makes clothing, but I'd like to know more. How were clothes designed, fitted & made? Did they last a long time? Were women the only people who made them or were there men, tailors, who made men's clothing like some do today. Were there any places to buy clothes or hand me downs for people who couldn't sew or afford someone to make their clothes? How did the poor, for example, get clothes? Ok... that's more than one question & maybe too long for a video, clothing is interesting to me because of how women were said to use clothes or quilts on their clothesline as signals to warn their local militia about incoming British troops. (The same thing was said to be done to help slaves escape to freedom on the underground railroad a hundred years later in the south. Embroidery was used to teach letters to women who weren't allowed to go to school, it is said. There's a lot of history around clothing just there was in your special about the woman who washed clothes. So fascinating!

Do you mean only Patreon subscribers can ask the questions? And how do you decide which questions to make the video about? Sounds tough to do. After all, a lot of people watch y'all & folks might feel left out. I think it's a great idea, but I also think you could have fun with it & let us in on the fun. For example: Let's say one week you have a shooting contest that makes the decision. You take the top three questions people sent in that week, you decide those, & write them out on parchment, punch a hole on the top & string each one to a stick in the ground with a piece of leather. Then you tell us who the author of the question chose to be his or her champion. (That name would be given with the question should it be chosen. So you already know who it is.) Then the chosen champions take aim at their question & whoever shoots it down or comes closest wins. They could shoot with a period musket or bow & arrow or even a knife. The winner is the question you use for the video that week. As I'm pretty sure you know, people entertained themselves in all kinds of ways in those days. (Cards, arm wrestling, knife throwing for distance or aim, music, singing, fine embroidery, food at gatherings, handwriting, story telling, joke telling, etc) Why not pick one each week or month & use it as the means to choose the queston? P.S. by champion, I mean a staff member or yourself or maybe a guest you had on the show if that person could come back. You can ask people to ask for a champion and an alternative, just in case the first choice isn't available. In the event nether one can participate, then you could name the champion.

Of course that's a good idea. Choose the most frequently asked questions, and the rarely-asked questions, and all the interesting questions.... that should cover all of them

Frank MacLeod

Love the idea! Definitely have questions if you do this!

Brigit Zent

You're an excellent historian and speaker. I thoroughly everything that you share with us and thank you for your passion. Having said that, the only tome you seem not to be in your element is when you're answering questions at Nutmeg Tavern. You just don't seem as relaxed and comfortable as you normally are. Just my thoughts.

Karen Murphy

Jon, I really like that idea!!

Cindy Klenk (Highlands Recording Arts LLC)

Perhaps choose a Patreon topic of the month, picked from suggestions made by members the first week following the latest video posted. Or else make it less frequent to fit your time budget.

Mike Burns

I like the idea! Around 20-25 minutes seems like the ideal length.

Barry Drake

This seems similar to the pre Nutmeg Tavern days when you did prerecorded Q&A videos, but specific to Patreon supporters. I think it’s a good idea, but how would the question submitting process work?

RG de Stolfe

Great idea! I would like to know more about timekeeping in the 18th century - watches existed but were expensive and somewhat inaccurate. How did they make sure they went places on time, like church?

Mike Kruk

I love it! I would definitely suggest questions

Bridget Mack

How about a series about early americans writing about their experiences while travelling to europe, china, mexico, india and other places?

Antonio Rodrigues

Sounds good to me

Glenn Jones

I would enjoy that... I am sure there is so many questions everyone has on so many topics.

Jody Fleming

I think it is a good idea as something supplemental, but I wonder if you would run out of non-repetitive questions after a while. Perhaps Q&As on the latest videos, like you used to do.

BvD

I love this idea!

Stacy Lynch

As a fan I would love it. Your shows have inspired so many questions for me to go research on my own. I do think it could be exhausting to try to do though on a regular basis.
