DTH Documentries?

For a long time one of my favourite genres of movies has been documentaries, I love learning about things I didn't even know I was interested in. I like small stories on very specific topics, deep dives into weirdness. One of the best thing in Youtube Gaming this year has been the rise of Gaming Docs. Channels like Noclip and Cloth Map have quickly become my favourites and I've been envious that they have the opportunity to work on documentary type stuff in gaming. I like making the Myth videos on DTH, I'll never stop making them but I've always wanted bigger projects to work on but I don't have the finances to produce high quality stuff outside of just capturing game footage. A few days back I discovered a video from HBomberGuy telling the story about the guy who created Dragons Lair. I've never played the game, I have no interest in that topic but I loved the video and found it fascinating (link if you're interested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnPOQr1pxY8), the most important thing to me was that he told this story just by doing a lot of research, no travelling, expensive cameras or a crew, he just pieced it together himself and I know I can do that too.

I think the overall focus on DTH if I had to summarise the channel is 'unusual/weird stuff in video games' and I think that focus can be broader than what we are currently showing. One thing I have always found interesting is unusual communities of people. I love Louis Theroux's stuff, he usually focuses on specific groups of people living in a specific way that is unusual, from Neo-Nazi's to female body builders, it's all interesting stuff, people are weird and its fun to learn about them. I think this extends into gamers, gamers are often very weird.

There's communities of people dedicated to epic builds in Minecraft, there's role playing servers in Overwatch, Pokemon Go clubs and one rabbit hole I went down recently is No Man's Sky. NMS is a home to many communities, I thought the game was dead and abandoned but I was wrong, there's all sorts of groups still playing the game. There's made up governments, organised galaxy explorers, people who walk across entire planets and this is from 30 minutes of research. I think NMS is potentially one of the most interesting games of the last 10 years or so. From it's unbelievable hype, its huge disappointment of a release, the false promises, its weird player base, I think it would be a interesting area to cover.

So I'm going to give it a go, I'm going to attempt to put together a video documentary thing exploring the different communities of No Man's Sky. I've never done anything like this before and I probably wont be able to start on the project until 2018 but I thought i'd announce it here. I've never done anything like this but I think I have the skill set to pull it off and bring something new to the channel. I'm not sure if it will interest anyone, the genre isn't for everybody but I like to make what I want to make and this sounds like a fun new challenge. 

For now, I'm just going to be slowly playing the game again to familiarise myself with it while doing some casual research, most of this week and December will be crunch time for Myth videos so there probably won't be any news on this project until January, you guys will be the first to know about it and it's progress though. I'll have another update post later this week to let you guys know whats coming up, I'm going to do an intense recording week starting tomorrow. Hopefully get a ton of footage and be able to make Mythmas happen, i'll keep you posted.
