2025-03-17 22:59:55 +0000 UTCI think Roland is a lot and doesn't necessarily realize it since he's not super self aware. But then he adds extra intentionally as his way to push power dynamics and assert some dominance. So we end up with an already pretty extra Roland being very extra extra.

2025-03-17 12:14:37 +0000 UTCLike others have said, this show gets better and better as you go - the first season is one that I actually enjoy more in hindsight. Dan Levy (the creator, actor who plays David) has said that he wanted to write Breaking Good, as it were, so you have to start at the bottom in terms of character development and then work your way up. Kind of like The Good Place, in some ways. Stick with it, because the emotional pay-off is so, so worth it - I cannot begin to tell you. I am so attached to the character of Alexis that I based one of my D&D characters on her and her arc (she was a former child actress turned flapper charlatan Glamour bard, in case anyone's curious.) Also, yeah - Roland is one factor that only works for me a handful of times. There are a few scenes where I think it clicks, but most of the time I just want him to leave so we can get to the good stuff.

In case someone else hasn't mentioned it yet - David is actually Mr Rose (Eugene Levy)'s son, Dan Levy - and Twyla is his daughter, Sarah Levy. Also, Catherine O'Hara (Mrs Rose) and Eugene Levy have been in several hilarious movies together - at some point you should check out the mockumentary style movies made by Christopher Guest, there are several of them.

2025-03-16 22:08:40 +0000 UTCRoland is a mess! I think it’s the actor more than anything, Chris Elliott is hilarious but he has a very specific surreal physical comedy thing he does and I’m not sure it works with the tone of the show. It does get less annoying as the show goes on.
