Very similar childhood lie.....I was told if I swallowed watermelon seeds, a melon would grow in me and the vines come out my ears!! Back in those days you only had the large, oblong watermelons that had big, dark seeds in them. Those melons were tasty though and so much sweeter than the seedless variaties. I wish had saved some seeds to grow over and over now. Anyway, once I was told that lie, it took me a long time to eat a slice because I had to go digging for those seeds to make sure I didn't swallow any ....and if I did, I was so damn afraid for days waiting to see what would happen!

So I was very excited to “learn” that if I ate the seeds I could grow the vines out of my ears and thus have an endless supply of watermelon allll to myself. There was a funny commercial about that, where 2 kids were together, eating watermelon, and a mom had said that to them, and you see them outside eating watermelon saying there was no way that was true, and then a very pregnant woman walked past, it faded to black, and you just heard the sound of them spitting the seeds out all at once, haha.

There were several “common knowledge” lies we were told as kids; if you swallow gum, it will stay in your stomach for 7 years, and if you sit too close to the TV, you’ll go blind. You can’t go swimming right after eating because you’ll drown. If you drop a penny from the Space Needle and it lands on someone, it will kill them. Don't ever mix Soda and Pop Rocks - that will kill you too! It happened to Mikey. Hand to god. 🤞

You’re going to LOVE The Expanse, based on how much you’ve loved Contact, The Martian, and The Arrival. I was hooked from episode 1, but many viewers say they were hooked on episode 4, and it continues to ramp up the intensity in every episode after that point. There’s a nice dose of detective mystery in the beginning, too! As for the most outrageous lie I believed as a kid—my dad took my two brothers and I on full-on snipe hunts in the neighborhood. According to him, snipes were like ferrets. We were NOT a hunting family so in retrospect the whole thing was out of place anyway. I think we believed him about snipes for like 2 years before we figured out that they don’t exist 😅
