In general, something listed as 'Anime canon' is where the anime took something that was in the manga and expanded on it beyond what the manga gave us for it. The 'where are the Straw hats' bits were cover stories that only got one or two pages each to give us an idea where they are, with the anime fleshing them out more.

2008, plus Japan having a much different cultural take on these things then the West even at that point. Yeah it's not exactly well done, but you can tell Oda meant well, he just didn't realize how bad it could come off. Especially given what comes later.

Momoiro Island/Kamabakka Kingdom is canonically acknowledged as a "queer paradise", specifically for "men who have maidens hearts" so... it's kinda bad?? Don't get me wrong! As a trans queer person, I personally enjoy some of its elements, and I'm a HUGE Sanji fan, but Oda handles queerness and transness VERY BADLY. Momoiro and the characters on it are basically transphobia brought to life. As such this locale and the characters associated with it are a sort of sore spot for a lot of the queer fanbase. I personally don't think it was malicious on Oda's part, just that he's GREATLY uneducated. Sucks he accidentally made Sanji a transphobe tho. (The source chapter came out in late 2008. So it's sadly also not really a suprise)

Kamabakka means "nothing but transvestites".. Also I love how Hancock is simping over Luffy. Her scenarios of both of them together is hilarious. I refer to him as "Chad Luffy" in these scenes haha.

One hypothesis I have (and I've seen it proposed elsewhere too, so I don't remember if I came up with it independently or not) is that Luffy actually weighs somewhat significantly more than his appearance would suggest -- he's just extremely physically dense because of his body's rubber properties. That would also explain how he packs such a wallop despite looking scrawny: he has a ton of muscle mass that's actually just always constricted/compressed inside him until he throws a punch and it stretches. If his bones contract too, that could also be a clue as to why he's not nearly as tall as his dad or granddad.

I'm glad you decided to watch these because they help you find out where everyone landed after Kuma sent them away
