I also do think Ah Duo was just close to Jinshi because she was his older brothers only concubine while he was growing up.

We don't know how long he was in her care, but she grew to love him anyway and was still heartbroken by his death. We've already seen so many familial relationships that aren't necessarily biological like Maomao and her family at the brothel, Ah Duo and Lishu. I like that in this setting where blood means so much in terms of succession and status, the story acknowledges that it's not the only thing that makes families. People don't need to share a blood connection to form real bonds. Also I love how you've clocked on to Maomao being an unreliable narrator to a degree. For how intellectual she is and how she good she is at reading social power dynamics, she's remarkably dense about her own ability to have empathy and connect with other people.

She wanted what was best for him and she's been consumed with guilt ever since which has manifested in this intense and fierce desire to do whatever she can to ensure Ah Dua stays in her position but also never learns the truth because she cannot live with the idea of her mistress despising her. Doesn't mean it's right but also doesn't mean she's malicious.
