This is a really funny episode - I love it so much. But it's not all fun an games, there's a lot of story setup too, as you already noticed. When the new concubine enters the rear palace, there's a flower shown, called Himalayan snowbell, the flower language of which is 'hidden emotions', which is very very interesting :) About the thing with the coat - Maomao wasn't mumbling this time, the issue was that she's thanking Gaoshun, even though the coat is a present from Jinshi. It's him thinking about her and not wanting her to be cold, but he cannot give it to her directly, hence he's using Gaushun as a proxy. Which makes Maomao's misunderstanding all the funnier and sadder at the same time :D

2025-10-22 05:04:13 +0000 UTCThere is a meme that goes through the fandom, is that maomao is a like the worker at work that accidently got to valuable and is not being paid enough to be here. This women is doing way to much above her pay grade. Also there are small comics on the side that the anime doesn't adapt but the emperor actually has maomao supply him with a steady stream of smut from the verdigris house after this class she teaches. Thus that is how maomao became the smut dealer for the emperor lol (this is not really brought up again in the series and its on the dl, but I still find it very funny how maomao is just like using the court to get more cash for the verdigris house, that women is a money maker first and a nosy Nancy second) I still really love your interpretations of the series and I can't wait for you to see more, I think you'll really love it!

So when Maomao was thinking something about Gaoshun, she wasn't saying it out loud; it's her inner thought. Hope this helps!
