2020-09-13 07:30:13 +0000 UTCi personally am not a big fan of giving characters these huge sacrifice moments, and then ruin that by showing us later on that they didn't sacrifice anything. His moment is destroyed by him not dying. Animes do that a lot....Now when they re-watch it his moment won't feel as impactful, because you already know he doesn't die anyway. Takes all the drama and intensity out. Now it is just another super hero doing super hero things.

If I were to explain what might have happened, I'd say that the blast from the bomb was far enough underneath him that it blew him further into the sky and he took burns, concussive and fall damage, but didn't get completely incinerated. Just my way of rationalizing it, I guess. Completely unrelated side note: In Oda's manga chapters, the title pages have a single-panel frame that show what's happening elsewhere around the world, which is how he communicates the world and characters progressing independently. This way when characters show up again in the stories with new circumstances, these were likely explained through those single-panel entries.
