I'm honestly on the side of thinking that he was cry laughing because he just got his first official friendship and didn't realize that he had one all along. I'm that type too. Recently I said to my brother's girlfriend that I wish I had friends and she said "I thought we were friends!"....that shocked me. I'm kinda a shut in and never had friends....but here she was all along a friend and I didn't realize it(she's only known me for a short time too). Also, I never thought there was anything romantic or anything with Otto and knew he was a he. It's always interesting seeing/hearing what others interpret.
