I’m just gonna listen to it and not confuse myself.

2022-05-30 18:43:34 +0000 UTCIf were talking about basics most of the people above is correct. In terms of actual conversation we rarely use watashi, ore , boku, atashi, and watakushi. In a normal casual conversation Context is very important thats why "I' or "you" is not used often and it is not necessary to understand each others conversation. Thats why its easy to spot a beginner when they use watashi to refer to themselves in every sentence.

It’s just that it’s more common for men to use “ore” or “boku” instead of “watashi” in casual conversation cuz those terms make the speaker sound more masculine. But when men want to be more formal they use “watashi” so you should use watashi when learning the basics. There are hundreds of first person pronouns each for a different situation so there’s no need to learn them all right away. For the sake of learning the basic grammar Watashi is enough

2022-05-30 17:03:40 +0000 UTCWatashi is not feminine. It just so happens that women use watashi more, because guys use ore or boku especially in casual speech. Watashi is polite speech and is what most people would use when talking to strangers.

Boku and Ore are considered more masculine (though you'll see women use these sometimes too, though that's pretty rare bc Japan's pretty rigid with gender roles), and Atashi is like a more feminine version of Watashi, but Watashi is gender neutral. It's just that that Atashi is super cutesy so most women tend to just use Watashi, so there's a misconception that it's a feminine pronoun

Well one of the people he interviewed said he had to relearn Japanese because his co-workers thought he was gay because he kept using the feminine endings instead of masculine endings - he learned from a female teacher lol. 2022-05-30 14:58:03 +0000 UTCSo when I took Japanese back in 1992/93 we were taught “watashi wa” but my instructor did mention that it’s common for men to say “boku wa”. I still said watashi wa because it’s what was in my books and homework. I have forgotten 98% of what I learned back then.

Boys usually use "boku" 僕, Luffy likes to use (ore) 俺, samurai (male) usually use "Sessha" 拙者, that's why Zoro was curious and feel weird Kiku use "Sessha" to address herself. And many type of knowledge in female and male tone and wording. But don't worry, no one is gonna judge. Listening to anime increase the learning speed and fun.

So: Guys: watashi -> formal boku -> informal ore -> informal (my teacher said it's not that commom to use it in real life, but in anime we hear it a lot) Ladies: watashi -> formal / informal watakushi -> very formal boku -> strange for ladies to use, but some of them use in anime
