@SoulRichy, You're thinking of sand. We use sand to add traction onto ice when the temperature has dipped to a point where salts ability to melt the ice it's applied to has become ineffectual or just economically inefficient. Also, your living location doesn't mean anything when considering knowledge and understanding of basic scientific principles. I'm not saying you aren't smart. Just saying that residing in Indiana doesn't automatically mean you understand how freezing points work or what the salination of a liquid-like water-does to its' freezing point. If our only goal with icy roads was to increase friction, there are much cheaper options than sprinkling salt on them. A coarse sand or a fine gravel would be sufficient in adding a little traction. The point of salt isn't to add traction but to remove the element that is reducing traction in the first place.

What folks specifically do with de icing salt wasn’t my objective. But since it affects the freezing point of water that’s why it helps with your walking traction. And the big gate is the only reliable way in, the gate Nancy found quickly closed behind her, and they absolutely would need a way back out.
