The important takeaway from the scene with hanayama, kozue, and baki is essentially that the fighters disregard the others in their life and their lives outside of combat for the sake of "getting stronger". kozue's father dying in a match makes her more scared for the lives of the fighters and especially baki than they ever could be. in a sense the whole question of baki's story is whether he will lose himself to gaining strength solely to become stronger than his father (like his father) or he will satisfy his personal needs through other ways than purely strength and have a wholesome life.
