I think Lugh honestly loves Dia since he suppressed his emotion before coming to this world and it's different now since he showed more of his emotions instead since he's able to (Episode 1 when he frustrated showed it to us). If he even plots something bad against Dia, they usually will show it in Anime like what we see when he saved Tarte in Episode 4. Also, what I see with his conversation with his father, it's just an honest one on one talk in which his father doesn't want him to regret if he decided to choose to live as Tuathe De, and Lugh responded that he wants to live as an Assassin Aristocrat just to marry Dia, so it's just plain and simple.

I think part of it is cuz he lost his first child Ruff to the assassination business so he wants to make sure Lugh has a way out in case he doesnt wanna do it anymore. Also it's true that Lugh wasnt using Dia as an excuse to prove to his father that he makes mistakes. He is genuinely in love with Dia and wants to marry her and cant do so if he doesnt remain the son of a Baron house like Tuatha De since Viekone is a Count house.
