The uncle is an interesting character. The Light Novel heavily implies that he was an infantry soldier in the frontlines when the war first started, before the whole 86 system was set up. That gun he brought with him was a present the army gave him for his service, his own personal gun, that Lena remarks he's kept well maintained all these years. Those boots were scuffed because those were his old infantry boots, that he saw actual battle against the Legion with. Unlike the other Alba, he came here ready to fight. He knew it was coming to this. He knew all this racist ass opression was coming to bite the Alba in the ass sooner or later but he didn't know how to stop it so he resigned himself to what he sees as the inevitable. But he IS willing to go down swinging. And Lena convinced him to give her a shot. He's off to die so that she might be better than him. He's still a piece of shit for going along with the oppression but he does have SOME semblance of honor I guess.

He was shown quickly, he was in the legion, and he was talking about protecting the princess and they even showed the princess in a 1 second flashback. They show his juggernaut in episode 7, it's super long range artillery that devastated a bunch of Spearhead Squadron members. I saw season 1 again and noticed a lot, now that I have the knowledge from season 2.
