They are created using magic, but there has to be someone to use that magic on, and since Witchers can't have kids, the law of surprise becomes quite the convenient tool. But as you already pointed out, witcher are an anomaly and the law of surprise has a different meaning and use to them. All the previous posts are correct. The law of surprise does not mean a child of surprise or marriage, but for Witchers that is actually one of the most valuable form of payment.

It has nothing to do with marriage or making children – it's just the other guy decided to marry Parvatta? Because they were in love. They briefly explained the law of surprise in episode 4, but that's the general idea. The odds of the surprise being a child is very small.

When you claim the law of surprise you get whatever the person is surprised by, for example if he found a couple gold coins in his bag the next night that belongs to claimer of law of surprise. In this event he was surprised by a child, which means that child belongs to him now.

Geralt currently owns the princess.

Witchers are mutans/hybrids and hybrids will as far as i know always be sterile, but they did lose the ability to make witchers because you needed special potions and i think only 1/10 children survives that. They talk about the sacking of Kaer Morhen where the recipe and people capable of making it were lost. Please correct me if i got some of this wrong
