2022-01-01 15:17:30 +0000 UTCAre we forgetting Fishman Island already? The Big Mom Pirates are EXACTLY like the Mafia, INCLUDING the penalty for failing to pay the protection fee. The only reason that Fishman Island didn't have the penalty imposed on them for failing (through no real fault of their own) to meet Big Mom's quota on time was because Luffy redirected her wrath upon himself instead. Of course I get the feeling that you're referring to the people living on these islands, but even there the choice is deceptive. If they don't want to pay a portion of their souls (lifespan) then they have to leave, but that choice is tantamount to suicide. It's highly doubtful that any of the citizens here have any real skills in sailing, and there are all kinds of dangers in the waters of Totto Land: the sea-ants, fruitball fish, Tarte scout ships looking to destroy any trespassing unauthorized ships, and who knows what else. You would have to be as skilled as Luffy's crew or as crazy (most likely both) to try navigating those waters without swearing allegiance to Big Mom's crew. So, to summarize, the "choice" the people are actually given boils down to give up part of their lifespan to live in "peace" in her territory or else lose their lives entirely trying to leave.

Though many people take it because her protection is worth it. So the Big Mom pirates are kinda like the mafia. Except the Big Mom pirates would let people leave if they didn't want to pay.

He was took a job he knew he couldn't complete and spent all the money for himself (as he said he did experiments and even though there were some results eventually the kids would die which is a failure). That is breach of contract. All criminals know not to spend your boss' money. He is in a problem of his own making and I do not feel sorry for him or see him as a victim.
