Well, cheating happens all the time in sports, it just carries a big risk. Flagrantly cheating like this would get the player banned, however. If he had worked out a deal with Team W and then stabbed them in the back, that could have worked out the best for him. Besides, I'm with Adorkable Nerd, if I was going to be expelled, the last thing I would do would be to make certain Kuon would never play soccer again.

Regardless of if Kuon’s decision was rational, in what way does it benefit him as they try and move to to the top. There will come a point in this system very quickly (maybe even now I haven’t read the manga) where true talent beats trickery. Not to mention, how can a striker who bails when his team isn’t good enough win a World Cup. Self preservation isn’t enough here…

So the last spot is virtually this game W vs Z. And you got the free 3 goals, why bother betraying Z? At that point he might as well flip again play with a 3-0 advantage.
