Chapter 208 – Homecoming (2) – Percy

Percy was about to start explaining everything to his uncle and grandpa, when somebody knocked on the door. And they did so rather eagerly too. Grabbing his bandage again from Baldy’s desk, he was about to put it back on, though he relaxed upon hearing the person speak.

“Grandpa, is Percy here?!”

It was a chirpy female voice – though a little more mature than Percy remembered. Still, he would have recognized it anywhere, regardless of how long it had been.

“Come in.” Archibald said.

Elaine didn’t even waste a second, spilling into the office like a flood. Her gaze instantly landed on Percy, her eyebrows briefly shooting up as she noticed his mutation. But she didn’t dwell much on it.

“Seriously?! You come home after being gone for 7 years and quiet for the last 2, and you don’t even bother to look for me?!” she asked, some bitterness seeping through.

“You were going to be my next stop.” Percy smiled wryly.

Elaine opened her mouth, seemingly about to snap at him again, but she held herself back upon seeing the caked blood still dirtying his clothes. Her anger faded the very next instant, as she rushed at him, hugging him tightly. Percy felt his bones creak – as always, his cousin wasn’t the best at controlling her own strength.

“Geez, I hope you don’t hug your baby brother like this.” he spat out with difficulty, getting a chuckle back.

“So, are you not going to introduce me to your friend?” Elaine asked with a hint of playfulness.

“Ahem. Like I just told the others, this is Nesha. We actually registered on the same day, though we didn’t really get to know each other until years later.”

Really? So, you’re just colleagues?” Elaine jabbed at him mischievously with her elbow, nearly bruising his ribs again.

“Look. It’s going to be a long story, so just grab a chair and sit like the others.” Percy rolled his eyes as he dodged the question. Though he did catch a hint of red flushing on Nesha’s cheeks.

Next, he looked at the others in the room, a little surprised they hadn’t interrupted his little reunion with Elaine. Not Baldy as much, but that prick, Galahad, was acting rather oddly today. It wasn’t like he had suddenly changed his entire worldview just because he’d learned Circulation. Percy hadn’t missed the faint traces of disdain in his uncle’s eyes – the man was still struggling to wrap his head around him and his bloodline. That said, he clearly wasn’t in a rush to outwardly dismiss or insult him anymore, opting to try and understand him a little better instead.

‘Oh well… I don’t even care…’

The only thing Percy wanted from his uncle was for him to be a strong and trustworthy leader for their family – in case something happened to Baldy. And that was something Archibald himself could vouch for, otherwise he wouldn’t have taught him Circulation in the first place. Beyond that, Percy wasn’t interested in improving his own relationship with the man.

Shrugging, he then proceeded to give his relatives a quick summary of his time in the Guild, as well as his clones’ adventures. Apparently, it wasn’t until now that Galahad finally understood how his bloodline even worked, or how it had allowed him to accomplish what he had.

Even Baldy and Elaine stared at him wide-eyed as he talked about the world of the floating cats, the demonic infestation in Takeo’s world, the bizarre technology in the Vault of Magic, or the underwater world of Atlantis. This was the first time they were hearing that the Status everyone on Remior enjoyed actually came from a Decree – the very qualification a god needed to call themselves a titan. Their jaws fell upon learning that his new eyes were the result of a brand-new Decree – which was also an excellent opportunity for him to flex his second core to his uncle.

Of course, he did water some specific elements down, not wanting to worry everyone. While he’d talked about the mysterious girl he had possessed and the spectral trait he had acquired as a result of that, he didn’t go into detail about how that clone had died on the way back to Remior. As for the Vault, he avoided mentioning his dealings with Metatron, or the corresponding Decree, making it sound like his adventure there was more of a one-off experience than a recurring thing.

However, he didn’t shy away from bringing up his and Nesha’s connection to the Aurora Dew, as that was relevant to his family.

“Have you lost your damn mind?!” Galahad yelled, losing his composure for the first time. “What madness possessed you, to pick a fight with the Divine Order?! And to even bring this nonsense to our doorstep?!”

Percy shrugged.

“I didn’t bring anything to your doorstep, as long as nobody speaks of this conversation again. Why do you think I didn’t involve our House in the first place? If anything goes wrong, just disown me and say I did this behind your backs. It’s the truth anyway…”

Nobody spoke for a while, everyone seemingly trying to wrap their minds around this revelation. Even Baldy and Elaine found the confirmation of his involvement more shocking than anything else he had shared, despite having previously suspected it – by their own admission. In the end, it was Archibald who broke the silence first.

“Why bring it up now, then?”

“Like I said, I didn’t want to involve you – especially since I had no way of talking to you in person before now. However, now that I’m here, I’d never forgive myself if I didn’t even give you the option to benefit from the new elixirs. If you want, we can find a way for me to brew a few doses. Maybe just for the people in this room, since we don’t want it to leak.”

Next, he turned to face Galahad directly.

“Uncle, I know this is risky, but it can also be a huge boon for our family. If you could shave a few years off your next advancement, it would place our House in a better spot.”

Seeing that Percy was only thinking of them in even bringing this up, Galahad’s expression mellowed somewhat, as he discussed the issue with Archibald over the next few minutes. In the end, he shook his head, however.

“It’s tempting, but it’s probably unwise of us to accept.” he ultimately said.

Percy nodded, not pressing the issue. Honestly, he’d expected this reaction. While he and Nesha had the freedom to travel around Remior and hide from the Divine Root, this wasn’t an option for Baldy or Galahad. They couldn’t exactly bring the whole family around with them, after all. They had too many people to care for, so they couldn’t risk the secret leaking out one day.

“Very well.” he said. “I’m still hoping to get one of the petals, however.”

Galahad sighed.

“Father mentioned you might want one, back when he taught me Circulation. Honestly, I’m still against it.”

“Seriously?!” it was Elaine’s turn to snap, the girl having mostly remained quiet during the previous conversation. “Even after what he’s done for our family?! That’s just unfair!”

But the man shook his head.

“It is unfair. I’m not denying it. And if I ever become the leader of House Avalon, I can promise you now that I won’t be a fair leader.”

Galahad’s declaration left Elaine speechless, the girl struggling to find the right response. In the end, the man just continued.

“A leader’s responsibility is to ensure the family survives and thrives, not that every member feels like they’re treated fairly. Circulation has greatly boosted my power, as it has yours, and Father’s. But there is no reason why we should give up a petal to a Red-born for it, either. Besides, we can’t even justify it. We can’t speak about any of Percy’s accomplishments, so how would we explain this to the others?”

Then, he flashed Baldy a quick glance, before turning to Percy.

“That said, I’m not the current leader of the family. Father is. If he wants to go through with this madness, I can’t stop him, nor will I try.”

Percy looked at Baldy too, curious about his reaction. The man didn’t say a word, seemingly torn between Galahad’s scathing words and his unwillingness to let him down. Then, Percy chuckled.

“You aren’t wrong, Uncle. But I’ve had plenty of time to think about this issue, and I haven’t returned home empty-handed. I’ve brought something tangible to exchange for the petal, so that nobody can criticize your decision.”

“Oh?” Baldy tilted his head, the others in the room sharing in his confusion. Even Nesha didn’t look like she knew where he was going with this.

Opening his spatial amulet, Percy took out a small pouch he had stuffed in a corner, before tossing it on Baldy’s desk. The man then opened it, spilling its contents on the aged wood for all to see. The thick scent of iron soon permeated the room, as he sifted through the pile, lining the torn pieces of fabric next to one another.

Elaine wrinkled her nose in disgust, though her eyes remained glued to the objects, much like everyone else’s. 19 of them in total, of which 15 where yellow and 4 were green, all depicting the same insignia – that of a man’s face sporting a set of strangely elongated canines.

And all of them were drenched in blood…

Honestly think it’s a mistake to share all his secrets.

Hellnhavoc

Honestly at this point I don't want him to get the water affinity, it feels like it would be a complete reset to his skills for no particular reason, everyone says pure affinity is worse but he has done more with it than any single individual we know and is easily managing to use it and his soul affinity to box above his weight class. As tangible as water affinity is I just feel like it doesn't add anything special to him and is more like a long term nerf until he manages to bring it to the same level as his current skills, also what happens to all the skills he learnt for pure mana when he changes? Unless the petal auto adjusts them to match the affinity it just seems like too much of a set back, both to his in-story skills and narratively. I'd much rather he gives it to Mickey and he continues to pioneer pure mana into somethin greater than anything his world could fathom. Hell overcoming the weaknesses of pure mana and making it great is inline with the theme of overcoming adversity and reality that the novel seems based around, a swap to water affinity just feels like taking the easy way out. Maybe if the option came up earlier when he hadn't built a style It wouldn't have bothered me but atp I can't say i'd like that development.

Daniel is ŁØNE

Oh that makes sense, I forgot that they mix and don’t necessarily get replaced

Amari Charles

It was stated that the petal works as such: Overwrites pure, combines with normal elements (air, fire, earth, etc.), does nothing with rare (space, time, soul, etc.), does nothing with affinities that are already composite (mud, light, storm, etc.), and does nothing if the recipient already has a water core. So if percy used it, it would have to overwrite his pure affinity

GreatCabbage

Horror but I don’t think it’s practical… if he’s land creature then yeah, but with the wind and high altitude and all, it’s cool but not POWERFUL as, as you say, storm

Touch

Pretty sure it's because everyone agrees on the following progression Red can only progress to green, Orange>Blue, Yellow>Violet/white with potential for godhood. That's his main thinking, in 100 years, that's all percy will be good for a green. Yes he'll contribute but why just get another green when he can make babies and give his abilities to those who'll reach violet/white in their life time.

Matthew Bernardin

Soul eating bird in the mists! There’s a lot of horror potential there.

Dsea

Would it even go to his pure core? Couldn’t it combine with his soul mana? Soul Well or river Stix affinity!

Dsea

If it’s storm then it’s good, I was thinking along the line of mists because air+water wouldn’t have lighting

Touch

Was my first thought as well!

Dsea

Storm?

Dsea

I agree with 80% of the people here, there’s no foreshadowing AT ALL that he would give it to Micky. And why would he want to use it on himself? His spells will collapse and need relearning, his elixir wouldn’t be able to refined (the powder from pure affinity condensation). Seem strange, Author should have foreshadowed in his thoughts even a little Though if it goes to Micky, then yes, he would get a power up in his AFFINITY. But he’s a freaking bird, what would he need smth like air+water for?

Touch

I honestly agree. I see alot of people are saying that he would give it to Mikey, but we really haven't gotten any foreshadowing for that. Furthermore, there's so many skills that Percy uses that depend on his arcane mana. Not to mention, arcane is require for the elixir right? So he's giving up his ability to cultivate many times faster than others so that he can have water ? I feel like this drive was born out of the cultural belief that his affinity was weak but clearly he has adapted and discovered many ways that pure mana is useful.

Blackjack

If Percy got the petal, it would overwrite his pure affinity, correct? Would he be able to “deattune” his water mana back to pure in order to crystallize?

GreatCabbage

Ya .. the comment you are replying to must not read many cultivator stories

Darune Albane

Yeah, I was thinking that, too, but I’m coming around. If the recipe was his only secret, the gods could certainly torture him, or Nes, or his entire House, and they’d get it. But they can’t torture him into giving people second cores, or Ea’s Decree, and at any time Percy can give it ALL to Metatron in a blink. He can probably give a second core to a god if they work together! He’s actually in a position to negotiate, and the gods might not like it but they’re going to have to look at him as an incredibly useful resource that they can’t risk wasting. And, there are a number of gods… he needs to get some of them on his side that are more powerful than Hermes. How about if Phoebe takes an interest in protecting him? She may already know about his second core since she filled it, and we haven’t heard anything from her yet. What is Hermes’ decree? I don’t think he’s as powerful a player as Phoebe or some of the others, and it’s time Percy got connected to some of the stronger ones.

Dove

Lol! "Trade with the gods" - from what we learned about the Divine Order, even just contacting them with the offer will get Percy tortured and killed, and house Avalon if not destroyed outright, then at least reduced to a minor house "to make a point". His best bet, should he want to end this, will be to let them find the recipe ANONYMOUSLY, preferably on a corpse of a promising alchemist, who could reasonably come up with it, or at the very least fake his death again.

V

Instead of taking House Avalon resources at all, he should trade Aurora Dew to the gods for a petal. They want the recipe enough that they have to be willing to make a deal with him.

Dove

It would mix with his air affinity to make storm. He’ll have to adjust his tornado and acceleration, but it would otherwise be a complete upgrade

GreatCabbage

Oooh, Bounties

Blackhole

Which affinity would micky replace? I don’t think either really make sense for him

Amari Charles

ANOTHER CLIFF I MIGHT CRY AGAIN

Amari Charles

That petal is definitely going to micky.

GreatCabbage

Agreed. If his total mana doubles at each tier up, he doesn't need a whole core just for crafting. He can easily convert enough for his needs while crafting and then have an actually combat capable core in fights. That being said, from the hints the author has dropped, his second core is going to be more versatile than we are expecting. Maybe he will study the process of the pure to water core conversion and figure out how to mimick any mana type, or at least figure out it's possible and then learn each mana type one by one.

R. Maxwell Steele

You have rewards for effort, and then you have strategic resources. This family clan is like a militia. Your infantry can win a bunch of battles and they get rewards with commendations/metals and pick of available stations, even commands on that level, more money sure, but the sniper rifles are still reserved for the elites. The drones are still flown by trained pilots. Etc. so here they see Percy as infantry, a very standout resourceful infantry. But he's asking for them to gamble on giving him an f16. So he's got to reframe how they see him, frame himself as someone who can fly first.

R. Maxwell Steele

Everyone saying 'why does he want it' , surely he wants it for Micky, air + water, Storm Crow FTW

Michael Mckenzie

Maybe he hopes to get his Cyan and teal powder with mana conversion.

Xorvivs

And they are. But Percy isn't asking for competitive compensation with the petal by the world's standards. He's asking to be paid a million dollar signing on bonus for a barely above minimum wage job. The petals are literal gifts from the gods, and Percy is not even expected to live even a quatar as long as some of the candidates for this gift. Plus Gallahad is also a dick, so there's that too.

Natalie

That's true. But in this society they basically have no expectations of a Red born. They are basically only useful as breeding potential for blood lines. This has been mentioned several times previously that the best expected use of a Red is exactly for that purpose. Either because they have the family bloodline or they get a new and useful mutation of the bloodline. They are basically used as studs or mares in the hopes their offspring will be Orange or higher. Even Orange is borderline, but is maybe potentially useful. In this setting being born Red is basically being born with a birth defect. At least in the context of Houses. In the general population its less of an issue since they are also mostly Reds too. In the early chapters it was even said that Reds of Houses are barely even let out of the family compound, and only with an escort. Because they are so weak and live so short of a life that they aren't even considered to be safe to go anywhere on their own.

Natalie

Dynasty is a good work for it. And dynasies are generally make sure their members are compensated for work beyond "do it for the dynasty". It helps to keep up their motivation

Apoca

Maybe, but you don't have any expectations for a hamster either. They just have to sit in their cage and eat when fed. And there is plenty of families IRL where they think children are free labor. It never ends well for that family's cohesion.

Apoca

I think dynasty would be a better description than family. Family in the modern sense is a small nuclear structure of parents, children and maybe one or two generations out from that. The Avalon House is a collection of dozens or hundreds of such families under a (in this case at least) a Patriarch, who is in overall control of all the families. All the families are expected to work to the advantage of the dynasty, but within each family they would be able to show the kind of empathy Apoca seems to assume they should show. The extended lifespans further complicate things. Archibald is Percy's grandad. But chronologically he's closer to being his great x4 grandad given his presumed age given his core rank right?

Natalie

I think that he still thinks of pure as a bit of a lacklustre affinity. And the combination of the prevalence of pure core users and the ease of learning the crystallisation technique means he's not overly concerned about losing access to performing it himself, as his plans still revolve around staying in one place for extended periods of time. Remember Percy isn't aware that they have a karmic affinity user hunting him right now. I think that he'll probably give up on the idea of the petal once he realises that he can't settle down any time in the next few decades while what's his name is still hunting him.

Natalie

I think that the biggest issue you have with understand Gallahads perspective is age. You have to remember that Gallaghad has the potential to live for a few thousand years. Its ingrained that a reborn has at absolute most, with all the resources in the world I think 900 years or so? Galahad could literally outlive dozens of reds. It's the equivalent of spending a million dollars to give a prosthetic leg to a hamster. Would it potentially improve the quality of the hamsters life? Yea, sure. Would it be a wise and responsible investment of resources? Absolutely not. To Galahad, Percy has the lifespan of a hamster. He's not proven to him that this hamster just so happens to shit golden nuggets.

Natalie

House Avalon is ultimately a family. Galahad expects Percy and everyone to contribute for the family’s survival and is willing to do the same himself. In his mind, Percy should contribute his bloodline but not expect precious resources to be wasted on him.

PathOfPen

There are 2 strange viewpoints in this chapter. Galahad's viewpoint is strange. I mean I understand it to a point but any organization where merit doesn't result in reward is not sustainable. He basically saying that Percy can do anything he shouldn't get a petal because of being red born. Percy's viewpoint is strange. Why does he want the petal still? Half of his power system is based on the pure core. His spells will collapse if he changes one of his cores. He will need to relearn everything and there is no guarantee soul and water mana mixed will be as useful as teal mana. Or that he can even mix them. (I think he was mainly successful forming the unorthodox teal mana because pure mana is so adaptable )

Apoca

why does he even want it? his pure core is super important! if anything, I figured he'd warn baldy not to use them on pure core ppl
