Chapter 213 – Homecoming (7) – Rambert
Added 2025-01-16 07:01:01 +0000 UTCSeveral days earlier
A frog hopped atop a protrusion jutting out of the mud, its rhythmic croaks echoing within the depths of the bog. Big mistake on its part…
Suddenly, a mound of dirt surged outwards, startling the poor creature. Frightened, it leapt away, trying to escape. But it wasn’t nearly quick enough. Catching up in an instant, the object snapped shut around the frog, trapping it in an iron grip. Over the next second or two, the critter visibly shrivelled, its very life sucked right out of its tiny frame. Its skin sank inwards, wrapping around the bones tightly. At the same time, mud flowed down the culprit, soon revealing a few patches of skin beneath the filth.
It was a person’s hand!
Though it wasn’t in much better shape than the frog. It was pale as milk, covered in lots of nasty cuts caked in dried blood. It was nearly desiccated too, the almost-skeletal fingers looking even worse than the critter did. At least, that was the case at first. Soon, the frog was reduced to nothing, its drained body crumbling into fine dust. It trickled through the gaps between the digits, scattering silently in the soft breeze.
With difficulty, Rambert pushed himself to his feet, coughing erratically as he struggled to spit the viscous sludge out of his lungs. The water’s texture was both slimy and grainy, the aftertaste of rot and decay making him gag. But that was the least of his problems. Even standing was painful, as one of his legs was injured badly, threatening to buckle. Looking up, he tried to locate the sun through the dense canopies of the trees around him.
‘It’s morning…’ he guessed, based on whatever gentle rays managed to pierce through the branches.
Orienting himself, he limped towards a certain direction, shifting most of his weight to his good leg. Next, he checked the stump on his shoulder. Blood was still spilling from it, though it wasn’t as bad as before – mostly because he’d lost a ton already. If he didn’t have the physique of a Green, his body wouldn’t even be able to move right now.
Looking down at his clothes, he noticed they were torn from the fight. An even larger patch was missing right around where his insignia used to be. Ignoring that for now, he tore another strip out, wrapping it tightly around his shoulder, trying to halt the blood flow. It definitely helped a little, but it didn’t stop entirely.
‘I can’t afford to lose another drop.’ he thought grimly.
Taking a few deep breaths, he gathered some mana in his core. Next, he ripped another patch of cloth from his garments, stuffing it in his mouth. Finally, he pulled the mana to his remaining hand, pressing it against the wound. His flesh hissed under the sizzling heat, a wave of agony slamming into his brain.
“GGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!”
Rambert’s teeth cut through the dirty silk, grinding against one another, cracking sounds reverberating through his skull. They hurt like a bitch too, though not nearly as much as his shoulder. But he didn’t pause. He had to cauterize the wound. It wasn’t until a minute or two later that he finally stopped. He breathed heavily, trying to regain his bearing as he scanned his injury. It still oozed blood, though it was much better than before.
‘It’s the best I can do right now…’ he sighed.
Taking off, he allowed his Mana Sense to spread through his surroundings, keeping an eye out for more critters. A body released several times more life mana when broken down by his bloodline than what would fit inside a core of the same grade. Even then, a few Red squirrels wouldn’t do much for him – definitely not worth actively hunting them down – but he wasn’t going to pass on them if they were dumb enough to cross his path.
‘Should I return to the town?’ he wondered. The peasants would make for a much better tonic than small animals.
He considered it for a few seconds, before shaking his head. There were several problems with that idea, not the least of which being the fact that he was unlikely to pull it off. He couldn’t take on the whole town by himself on a good day. Let alone in his present state. The townsfolk would finish him off and try to pin the crime on Percy and his girlfriend.
‘I fucking hate them so damn much!’ he thought, launching a bolt of fire with a wave of his hand.
It pierced through a nearby tree, its trunk exploding into a rain of splinters as the acrid scent of burnt charcoal assaulted his nose. The act did little to vent his frustration, however. His physical pain aside, the sheer humiliation of getting his ass handed to him by a Red-born was a stain he’d never wash away in this life.
‘One day, I’ll kill you both…’ he swore to himself.
***
Luckily, he had found a couple more animals on the way, but he’d chosen to keep their carcasses intact, to munch on during the journey. They were more useful as food, partly because life mana couldn’t entirely replace nutrition.
Returning to his family had taken longer than he’d like. Normally, it was a two-day trip – shorter if he rushed. Not like this, however. By the time he made it to the mansion, just over half a week had passed. At least, he’d had a chance to cool down and reevaluate his situation. As much as he wanted to take revenge against Percy and Nesha, his current priority should be to heal.
Entering the building, he made his way towards Father’s office, ignoring the startled gasps and long stares he got from his relatives. Most of them took a few seconds to recognize him, but nobody tried to stop him, as his core still blazed in a burning Green, the remnants of his clothes the unmistakable colours of House Tantalus. Or maybe they were just scared to approach. He probably looked like a reanimated corpse right now…
He only paused once he stood outside the door, hesitating.
Returning home after a failure was a novel experience for Rambert. Normally, he was the one delivering the good news to Broteas. Reporting how everything had gone to shit was typically a shame reserved for the others.
‘I hope this doesn’t change things between us...’
Steeling his resolve, he was about to knock, when he heard shouts coming out of the room.
“Lord Broteas, I still think it was a mistake to attack House Avalon in the first place!” Elder Nak – the oldest Blue in the family – yelled. “Look at what has happened! We lost more people than they did!”
“Not this nonsense again!” Father shouted back. “As always, you can’t look beyond what’s right in front of your nose, Nak! You think I had an option?! What do you think will happen once Galahad gets a petal?!”
“Uncle… We’ve already tried to assassinate that bastard, but we all know how that ended. I don’t think we’ll get another chance. The lotus will bloom in a few weeks…” Halcard said.
Halcard was another Blue – technically Rambert’s cousin, though he was a few centuries older than him.
“You think I don’t know that?! I still can’t understand how you and Lendin managed to lose to him together!”
The meeting went on for another hour or so, Rambert waiting patiently by the entrance, not daring to interrupt. The last thing his father and his elders needed to hear right now was how the mission to the Grisly Bog had ended. Listening patiently to the heated debate, he understood once more just how badly the war was going for his House. That said, the people in the office didn’t seem to have the slightest clue of what they were truly up against.
‘If Percy taught his relatives half the tricks he used to take me down, we never stood a chance…’
Eventually, the meeting ended, the elders leaving the office. Seeing Rambert there, they flashed him curious glances, but nobody seemed in the mood to ask him any questions. Ignoring them, he strode into the office, causing Broteas to raise an eyebrow.
“Don’t tell me you fucked up too, Rambert.” Father spoke sombrely, his barely concealed rage boiling beneath the veneer of calm.
“They had four Greens stationed in the bog!” Rambert lied through his teeth, too embarrassed to look Broteas in the eye. “I didn’t even get to see their faces properly!”
“This is all happening because of my cursed affinity!” Father snapped. “Why the hell couldn’t I have any other element?!”
Rambert knew what he was talking about, as they’d had this conversation many times. Unfortunately, Broteas had a water affinity already, meaning that he couldn’t boost his strength with a petal. They had two Blues who could, but their House would still benefit less from the exotic treasure than their rivals. If it hadn’t been for that, they wouldn’t have needed to take such a massive gamble with this war.
“Can I still get mine?” Rambert asked cautiously.
Perhaps, this wasn’t the best time to bring the topic up, but this was one of the main things stressing him out right now.
“You have the nerve to ask me that?! After losing both Grian and Dranold?! After showing up looking like… this?!” Father gestured at him, his face distorting in disgust.
Rambert swallowed hard. He wanted to protest, but chose to hold his tongue instead, not wanting to pour any more oil in the fire. Fortunately, Broteas exhaled in defeat a moment later, before speaking.
“You’re lucky everyone else in this family is an even greater disappointment than you.” he waved at him dismissively.
Rambert hurried to leave the room while he was still ahead, but his father spoke again, stopping him in his tracks.
“Can you even fix your body? You look like a complete mess. I’d rather not waste the petal on you just for you to die a week later.”
Rambert couldn’t help but clench his fist upon hearing his father’s callous words. He cared more about wasting resources than his well-being. Then again, that wasn’t anything new – it just rarely applied to Rambert, as he was more useful than most.
“You don’t have to worry about that.” he spat, before leaving the room.
It was another lie, of course. Rambert wasn’t entirely sure he could recover from this. But he was certain of one thing. He was going to do whatever it took to survive.
And to get his revenge…

And if this is percy possesing this guy, he made a blunder. Isn't he afraid that that cursed bloodline would carry over to the real body?

2025-03-29 14:44:02 +0000 UTCNow this is just pure bullshit. Percy has soul attacks. He didn't use any for whatever reason. Ok I can pass that somehow but not much. This is too much. He has sorcerer's eyes. And soul sight. He wouldn't miss that opponent is alive and playing dead. And he could have given one or two good slice on his soul even if he didn't do that in fight. This kind of force plots are frustrating and disgusting even. This is so obviously wrong, it could have never happened if author remembered that mc can do soul attacks and has now permanently open soul sight. Whatever plot comes of it even if it's best of the best and masterful writing it is already ruined because origin is fake 😑😐

HETOS
2025-03-16 03:28:12 +0000 UTCThis has to be one of the most disappointing chapter developments. Going completely against the Percy's entire persona cultivated over 200 chapters with readers. A complete retrograde to just create another enemy? A blue or a grieving father would be infinitely more believable than this turn of events.... Surrounded with scythes and pure mana constructs and he 'forgets' to kill the green to take the emblem? A complete retrograde.

2025-03-12 02:41:14 +0000 UTCCannot have 2 bloodlines, he's got drain. So this is just Percy tearing off an emblem instead of stabbing him through the eye.
Dragonkinn
2025-03-12 02:37:19 +0000 UTCCannot have 2 bloodlines, not a clone, this is just saying the MC is -80 IQ points.

2025-03-12 02:36:20 +0000 UTCI’m assuming this is a clone thing. I think this is a poor use of vagueness. There should be some sort of fade to black. I have plans for you sort of thing.
Hellnhavoc
2025-02-28 19:41:04 +0000 UTCDon't like this. I trust that the story will be served by this, eventually, but I feel like it's not worth the problems it creates for the reader. Whatever the plan is, whether the obvious clone, or some other twist, this chapter undermines trust in the narrative itself, which is a dangerous game to play. Readers will now second geuss every single moment that a detail is left unexplained. Every clone sent off, every day not described, could now become a story asspull. I highly recommend you revisit this. I'm sure its going to be fine, as book 2 resolves, but this is playing with fire at best, and a very worrying move at worst, for any experienced royal road reader. Too many good stories have gone to shit from directions like this. If this hits the non patrons, unchanged, it'll probably burn off a sizable chunk of readers, in my experience, and cause annoying review bombing. Either way, love the story so far, and this is the only significant hiccup I've faced while catching up so far. Keep up the good work. <3

2025-02-22 04:54:34 +0000 UTCIts probably a soul clone, but yes this is precisely why I think he should mention it beforehand
SomeRandomGuy
2025-02-18 09:14:21 +0000 UTCIndeed. A rare occasion in this story that rarely makes these kinds of mistakes in logic. Not too fond of the 'evil that simply refuses to die' arc either. Stories get bogged down on such. And also, there is no way that Rambert could know that Percy is the one with the tricks teaching it to the rest of the family from this encounter alone.
Storyflower
2025-02-03 00:44:28 +0000 UTCThis would have to be intentional. They would have never left a green core intact. Big bird would not waste a green core. So this has to be a plot for a clone takeover to steel vials.

2025-02-02 23:31:36 +0000 UTCThis would make sense if the chapter was not rambert wanting revenge. Need heavy editing.
Leonardo Krieck
2025-01-27 04:46:13 +0000 UTCYa, this makes zero sense. His eyes alone would allow him to tell if he was still alive. This is just bad writing. You have to explain all the reasons that Percy wouldn't check, harvest his core, not sense his soul was still there, and so forth. This literally made me angry. Derze explained it better. Get rid of this chapter or rewrite it so it makes sense as Percy's clone.

2025-01-26 17:35:46 +0000 UTCI'm sorry but this alone is enough. I'm fucking done with this bull shit. You contradict yourself, you forget things you've done in the past and now you're pulling the most amount of bullshit from your ass on earth🙄 Like what the actual fuck.

2025-01-23 23:05:33 +0000 UTCAh, if only Percy had found a world with slasher flicks he wouldn't have made this error.

2025-01-18 17:06:44 +0000 UTCWas there a stated reason why mickey didnt eat rambert's corpse? It just seems strange as mickey has eaten at least the core of every high grade human enemy percy has killed, unless theres a reason mickey wouldnt/couldnt eat the core this feels very strange.
Alexander Stuart-Schield
2025-01-17 11:22:24 +0000 UTCI still stand by my comment, until further information is supplied this feels very out of character for the story so far told. I would suggest even if the stuff you have planned for later does have a good pay off that you should make at least some edits here just to make it feel less jarring. I think that's the issue we have with the way it's currently laid down. We don't need to know all the details are, just enough hints to know that *something* is happening that didn't just throw away all the established characterisation of Percy as someone who would absolutely make sure that the enemy he just killed is in fact dead. That's my only issue with how this chapter went down. It feels so far out of character for Percy that it almost felt like a slap in the face. It's like Sherlock Holmes suddenly saying "oh the little details don't matter." That's the whole thing of Holmes. And unless we get a little "oh I only said that to get them to let their guard down" line then it just feels.... off. That's where we stand right now.
Natalie
2025-01-16 20:53:55 +0000 UTCPercy collected the insignias from their clothes. Most of the cores he fed to Micky. They wouldn't last long anyway, if he left them alone.
PathOfPen
2025-01-16 16:16:01 +0000 UTCI'm confused, did Percy not collect his core with the others and then dump it out onto baldy's desk?
Guessed
2025-01-16 16:06:26 +0000 UTCWell if he has a soul clone in him then he still has his eyes on him. They probably buried Rambert to make him believe they made a mistake

2025-01-16 13:47:24 +0000 UTCSo... is it an excuse to teach Percy ruthlessness? Or was it "it is already more than 200 chapters in, where is the antagonist?" - you do realize that your story doesn't have to follow the "heroes journey" formula, right? Even the name of the book "the lone wanderer" suggests less emphasis on the cast around the MC, and more focus on the MC himself. And while an overpowered/recurring antagonist is a nice touch, they shouldn't break established conventions - Rambert should have been eaten by Micky, just like the rest of Percy's enemies - why waste valuable food, and leave dangerous evidence? A properly overpowered antagonist should have a special ability that allows them to escape, to learn about the abilities of Percy, get away, prepare, and try again, over and over. Thus pushing Percy to take ever greater risks to improve even faster, or at the very least have a new trick for every new encounter they have... or is it just a ploy to kill off Micky/Nesha, to keep Percy alone?
V
2025-01-16 12:51:16 +0000 UTCQuote from the battle with Rambert: "Though he never took his gaze off Rambert for even a second. Percy wouldn’t allow himself to relax until the guy was dead."
ThoMiCroN
2025-01-16 12:46:04 +0000 UTCNo. Percy basically soul-tortured the wasp until he was in control.
ThoMiCroN
2025-01-16 12:43:32 +0000 UTCI mean... He is doing a disservice to himself in an attempt to make a "clever" twist. If its Percy's Clone we need to be alluded to it. Being too crypted about it leads to this. I'd much rather know beforehand. Even if from Rambert's perspective he isnt aware, we need to have Percy acknowledge he successfully infiltrated/taken a green through use of his bloodline. If not the attempt. Besides, we spent the last chapters with Micky basically starving himself to death, people will obviously be upset.
Derze
2025-01-16 12:34:23 +0000 UTCHonestly. I call total BS. I know you might want to make a reveal that its in fact Percy Clone's making use of Rambert's. (lets hope thats the case) . But without that knowledge this chapter makes ZERO SENSE. You need to at least hint that Percy used the clone on Rambert. Else Micky should have eaten his core. or worse, eaten him completely. There is zero reason for him to be alive otherwise. It feels too forced. Percy has one and a millions ways to detect if someone is alive.
Derze
2025-01-16 12:29:41 +0000 UTCthis makes zero sense that they didnt feed core to micky, injured or not, its the work or a second to yoink it, and the core of a green is mega valuable to micky. The core aside, telling me they didn't confirm the kill when stripping patch, oh yeah they had time to get patch but when bent over the 'corpse' to get patch they didnt get core, just makes no sense, literally none. Edit: after my intial outrage at this i had a thought, what reason to leave him on the cusp of death to go back to family, clone behind enemey lines me thinks, apologies, theres a reason im the reader and your the author. love this story
Michael Mckenzie
2025-01-16 12:14:54 +0000 UTCPerhaps the only way to save this without retconning this chapter is to have Rambert drop dead after taking the petal..it would be hilarious..some sort of reaction to the petal...it would mimic real life where many real life revenge plans fall by the wayside.
Senoj Ttehr
2025-01-16 12:14:24 +0000 UTCIf not a clone, atleast a familiar, as that is one secret art that is not upgraded yet. Because everything in the comments about feeding Mickey the soul core and Percy's Soul Vision is all valid. And his Mutation is on all the time, there is no way Percy missed seeing Rambert still clinging to life while cutting off the Family Symbol off Ramberts clothing. Even if not, given his Paranoia till now and his track record of bold contingency plans from getting out of the Spire by going inside and through, living in Tantalus territory and wanting to rob them, but not letting any info about his secrets leak, all info we have about Percy, if he did not cut off Ramberts head and make sure of his death as he was eating his precious resource of Green mushrooms as he was healing in the bog, then logically he had other plans... .....that is in suspense and the author is building upto it to be a great reveal and I just analysed it to death 🙈

2025-01-16 11:16:59 +0000 UTCIn the past the original soul always has to agree. And then his status would say moira's decree and 2nd core. So maybe Percy is inside there blackmailing him that if he doesn't do what he says, he will put his soul in a blender. But he has to know right?

2025-01-16 09:51:42 +0000 UTCDamn, my sub expires in 6 days and I can't resub till months later, going to miss the ending of the book :( But things are coming together and sone questions I had and expressed in the comments, some answered and not by you makes more sense now xD Questions like, why did the end of the fight feel incomplete, and then the next scene being in the Whisperingwind Forest. Why did we have no mention of a clone, and what Percy is going to do about the Elixir supply till he reaches the Thirsty Valley. I think the heist is still on! But either way Rambert is done for when the clone leaves, or maybe Percy plans to also steal the Petal of Rambert, that would be the biggest loss to House Tantalus! Like I said damn, I am going to miss the ending 😅

2025-01-16 09:37:02 +0000 UTCHey guys :) I've been reading your comments over the past few days (as always, really), even if it seems I've been replying to them a little less than usual. This is deliberate on my part, as speculation and guesses are flying left and right, and book 2 is ending in a couple of weeks. It's a tough place to be, because anything I say can potentially spoil people, which I generally want to avoid. Overall, I'm currently happy with the ending, and I've already started writing book 3. That said, the reaction to this particular chapter has been a little... intense, to say the least, so I feel I do need to address it xD The gist of it is that I’m keeping things as they are for now because I want to see how you feel once the rest of it plays out. I *do* hear your feedback, and I *do* get where you're all coming from. I’m open to revisiting this chapter later, but I’d rather wait and see how opinions evolve before making any rash changes. I totally understand if some of you are feeling uncertain right now, but I genuinely believe that everything will come together in a way that makes sense. Regardless, thank you for supporting me all the way until now—it's much appreciated! I hope you all enjoy the rest of the book as much as I've enjoyed writing it!

2025-01-16 08:22:26 +0000 UTCI agree with this. This plot would only make sense if Percy attached a clone behind the scenes that will be revealed later. Percy I know would make sure the threat is dead with his soul vision.

2025-01-16 08:16:05 +0000 UTCHopefully the like means I hit the mark on keeping the feedback constructive, but feel free to let me know if I missed it. I don't tend to give this kind of thing the time I prefer to when doing this in a professional setting, and I hope you don't take it too seriously if I didn't word things as nicely as I could have.
Chris Fox
2025-01-16 08:08:59 +0000 UTCNot going to hate as much as some, but I really hope/assume Percy shoved a clone in him or something. This is an unfortunate way for the story to go otherwise. Obviously, if someone gets thrown off a cliff or something like that they come back. Dead should generally be dead in other cases, unless the story has setup the resurrection/unlife/inhuman resilience. I don't think that's the case here, when he's a bit of a random jobber we weren't really aware of until a few chapters ago. Assuming I'm correct, don't love missing important info the MC has in general, but it's better than the alternative. It's not like this is a Sherlock Holmes novel where we're reading from the everyman Watson's perspective and don't get to see the main character's actions or though process unless they are explained to us. Either way, I'm not dropping the story, but figured I'd leave some feedback that's trying to be constructive. Edits to expand some things.

2025-01-16 07:52:47 +0000 UTCi was just considering dropping this patreon but kept it but definitely dropping it now. this is lazy when will authors stop forcing weird plots. just have someone seek revenge for their dead cousing or something but no you had to resurrect the guy for whatever reason. do yourself a favor and revise this chapter. still gonna drop because this is indicative of future writing quality

2025-01-16 07:42:40 +0000 UTCI'm going to have to agree with others sentiments, but bring up an even bigger reason why this doesn't make sense with the information currently supplied. It's 2 words: Soul vision. How could Percy, even when severely weakened, not have noticed that Rambert's soul didn't dissipate when he "died". Unless some further information is supplied, like the drain bloodline having some quirky situational stuff of being able to revivify the bearer if the dead body touches life within a short time period after death or something? Like the soul appears to die, but is instead loosely tethered to the body for a short period beyond the veil in that soul space. Since Percy can't seem to see into that while not in soul form himself.
Natalie
2025-01-16 07:37:47 +0000 UTCI agree. This defies the characteristics that have been built for both Percy and Micky. Percy, with sorceror eyes couldnt tell he was not dead? Micky's starving and they left green cores on the battlefield?
Fozzy
2025-01-16 07:37:11 +0000 UTCA prime example of a major fuckup by an author xD Why does this happen? Because the Author wants something forcefully in his story to happen. Even if it makes no sense. The author forces the situation. And the readers are just like "WTF why?"

EsZeus
2025-01-16 07:29:04 +0000 UTCSry to say but this chapter went past the surprise and deep in "WTF, this doesn't make sense" category. Main reason being that there is no way Micky doesn't want the two cores that are not in pieces. This only makes sense if Percy wanted him to survive and I seriously doubt that

2025-01-16 07:17:41 +0000 UTCYou do you, but I’m just going to say, I *hate* when foes resurrect out of the blue. It just seems highly unlikely for Percy to leave a loose end like that, especially after they allegedly spent hours cleaning the battlefield.
