What is art?

I've got a comment. Something along the lines of "I never liked art but now it might change". It made me think about it for a whole day. Because, well, what is art?

For me art is in our everyday lives. In the composition of colors and in shapes. In the lights and in the shadows. It's in every bird that's chirping in Spring and in every thunder during a storm. For me nature is art and that's what I am trying to show in my photography.

I remember when I used to say the exact same thing as the person in the comment: "I hate art. I don't understand it and I probably never will" but that's bullshit. What I meant is that I don't like modern art. You know - these weird paintings that a child could paint and a weird sculptures or instalations that look shitty and are supposed to have this big meaning and talk about important things and everyone pretends to understand that. I never did. First I was ashamed of it because I felt stupid and uncultured but now I realised that there's everything for everyone and people are different. There's nothing to be ashamed of. I am really particular about what I like and what I don't.

Someone also said that art is subjective and I can't say if this kind of nudity in photography is vulgar (only made for a sexual reason and without any artistic idea behind it) and this kind is not sexual but rather artistic. And I partially agree on that. Art is subjective but also let's be honest. In most cases it's pretty easy to spot the difference.

I meant to write this post a long time ago but I finally got the courage to do so. I'd also love to know what you think about all of this? Do you agree or don't? It would be interesting to know your point of view.

Love, Erinthul.

What is art? What is art? What is art?

You're quite right, "modern art" is worth nothing artistically, but worth a lot financially - cctually, it's a scam, as the whole finance is a scam. About nudity, it was commonly used by greek artists, not only for erotic purposes, but because the human beauty was a way to feel the divine, and Eros was a god well connected with humans.

Thank you for taking your time to write this comment. You made a few interesting points here. I like how you said: something that captures the creators feelings, or their desire to express something they might not normally be able to say out loud. It's briliant! I also haven't thought about AI art. It's really interesting too. I myself don't know what to think of it - I liked some AI paintings but if there's no conscious creator then is it an art? It depends on the point of view really.

What does mean what? :D

Thank you kindly. This truly is the best compliment I could get. I didn't know I could ever be an inspiration to someone :)

The question of “What is Art?” is best asked along with “Why is Art?” or “Why is it Art?”. Creating something that captures the creators feelings, or their desire to express something they might not normally be able to say out loud might be called art. There are lots of reasons for Art, but the true intent often resides with the craftsperson or artist One thought on robot or AI Art; is it Art? In this case The answer lies with the viewer, and how they choose to consume the material. If you see robot Art as a condemnation of societal values, then it is Art… So, is Art subjective? Sometimes. Is a specific thing Art? The answer will change over time
