The mouse infestation was worsening.
Wilson seemed reluctant to actually do anything about it. The problem with calling an exterminator was letting someone inside the covert property. Additionally, they didnt want to risk exposing Zach to toxic chemicals. His new body was fragile, and they didnt know how pesticides could affect him. Zach didnt much care either way.
He was just hungry.
The sensation had appeared out of nowhere, but it occupied him constantly, and he could hardly focus. He would stare at his books but not read them, or sometimes become entranced by the caged birds, which had been moved to the living room. Even when he didnt see them, he could hear the chirping constantly.
One day, Zach even indulged his curiosity by opening the cage and reaching inside. He pet one, offered his hand. It easily perched on his finger, so domestic and trusting. He brought it close to his face. Allowed the feathers to brush his lips. So incredibly soft, perhaps the softest thing he had ever felt. Zach felt his eyes drift closed.
Zach. Wilsons voice startled him from his reverie. Are you warming up to the canaries?
Yep, said Zach awkwardly. He returned the bird to the cage and abruptly left.

Maybe Ill have eggs, Zach thought the following morning. He often found himself thinking about them and wondered if they might sit better than the other foods he tried to eat.
He slithered over to the basket and lifted one of the raw hen eggs into his hand. He was deliberating over whether he should scramble or boil it, when he found himself bringing the egg up to his face, and taking a gentle sniff. He allowed it to touch his lips. He tasted the shell with his tongue.
Then suddenly the egg was being sucked into his mouth and he took a huge gulp before he could even control himself. He felt his throat stretching uncomfortably, somehow accommodating the egg as it slid steadily down. Zach stood in shock as he tried to register what had just happened.
Hed swallowed an egg whole.
Zach sat down in his room and contemplated this new development. His stomach felt good. Fuller but not quite sated. He had none of the pain or discomfort he thought a person should experience of they swallowed a large egg, shell and all. Instead he felt entirely comfortableprobably moreso than before. The egg had been appetizing, and he decidedly wanted more. Hunger overwhelmed him.
Before he could think things through, Zach got up and slithered back to the kitchen, headed straight for the basket of eggs.
He lifted one, stared uneasily at it for a moment, then promptly stuffed it into his mouth. He closed his eyes as he swallowed, this time sort of enjoying the way it stretched his throat and dragged its way down with a rolling, pleasing tension. Mmmm he hummed, dipping his fingers into the basket and eating one after the next.
He went through the whole thing. It had to have been a dozen eggs, but he gulped them all down without pause. Once he was finished, he was stunned by how much he had been able to eat. He was finally sated, but beyond that. Stuffed. Tight. He groaned.
Zach slid his hands to his stomach, and he was startled to find a bulge there. He looked down at himself. His usually concave stomach was now bulging outward in a small gut. Bizarre, he thought. A normal person probably would not have been able to stuff down all those eggs. They would have choked or vomited the food up. Instead Zach had easily gotten it down, and now it sat so completely in his stomach that his abdomen was bulging outward, stretching to accommodate it.
Absolutely bizarre.
Zach felt tired. He dragged himself back to his room and lowered himself gingerly onto the bed.
He would have to speak to Wilson about this.
But for now, he just needed rest.
Zach stretched himself out on the bed, closed his eyes, and fell asleep immediately.

When Zach awoke late in the afternoon, he was surprised by how long he had managed to sleep. He almost thought that his egg-binge had been a dream, but then he saw the way his stomach was still bloatednot in a substantial way, but enough that it was clearly evident on his thin frame. Rather than feeling hard and tight, his abdomen was softer, more comfortable now. It gurgled. He was digesting. It was funny, weird, and a little unsettling.
He was even more of a snake than before.
You slept all afternoon, said Wilson when Zach joined him for dinner that evening. Are you feeling alright?
Yes, the Zach. He hesitated and then told Wilson about the incident with the eggs. What Zach had done to them. He didnt know why he still felt so embarrassed about it. It wasnt as though it was something hed had control of. It was just another part of what had been done to Zach. When he was finished, he felt rather flustered under Wilsons inquisitive gaze.
So my theory holds, said Wilson, finally. Your digestive system has been altered to the extent that you can no longer digest food the way us humans do.
The way Wilson said us humans, was rather startling. Zach wasnt sure quite when, but at some point he had become something else entirely. He was inhuman now.
Im glad you were finally able to eat, Zach. The others will be pleased as well. I will have more eggs ordered in. You might also consider trying to consume
IIm still just trying to process this whole thing. It its a lot.
Wilson gave a nod. Eggs then.
Eggs, Zach agreed. It seemed a safe place to start. He looked down at the unappealing chicken pie on his plate with mashed potatoes and chopped vegetables. Even the aroma disgusted Zach a little. I think Ill head back to my room.
Rest well, said Wilson.
Zach left.
He didnt rest.
He lay on his bed in the dark, by then conscious of how much easier it was to see in the night these days, how shadows had developed into figures that were easily distinguishable. He watched the mice scuttle about. Their population was only growing in that wing of the house. They were breeding. Zachs tongue dipped out and dragged over his dry bottom lip. Finally, he closed his eyes.
-
Zach ate a mouse.
It was the following afternoon, just when his hunger was beginning to niggle, and a small mouse had the audacity to scamper right across his desk. It was atypical for a house pest to be out and about in broad daylight, readily visible. It wasnt a pest behavior, more domesticated, more pet-like. But Zach was hardly minding as his hand darted out, beyond his control, as he grabbed up the mouse, clutching the warm, fleshy body in his hand. And before he could stop himself, he was stuffing the thing right into his mouth. His eyes went wide, and he began to panic, but rather than spitting it out, he just swallowed against it.
It was soft. Wriggly. It was alive, and it was going down his throat, as his neck pumped and contracted, forcing the thing deeper inside him, and when it hit his stomach, Zach felt baffled by what he had done. It had been an uncontrollable compulsion. Instinct. Zach held his head in his hands, feeling troubled.
Yet there was no guilt. It had been good. Satisfying. Pleasant. The heat of the creature, the sensation of it still moving. The pressure of the thing, still whole, where it sat in his stomach. Zach looked down at his abdomen to see it bulging, just slightly, again.
There were two knocks on the doorframe. Everything alright? said Wilson, as he peeked into the room. The door had been left ajar so Zach couldnt fault him.
Yes, said Zach quickly. He folded his arms over his waist, feeling abashed for some reason.
Wilson studied him for a moment. Alright, Zach. Can I interest you in a scrabble game later? At five?
Yes, Zach repeated distractedly.
Great, said Wilson. At five then. He walked off.
Zach stared absently at the spot where Wilson had been.
His hunger had awoken and now it was stirring relentlessly. He was still hungry. He wanted more. And on top of that, he longed to experiment, to explore his new tastes and method of eating. He wanted more ways to sate his yearning body.
Zach went to the living room. As expected, there was no sign of Wilson, as the man had walked off in the direction of his office. Zach slid straight to the bird cage. He opened it slowly. He decided that there was no point in continuing to put up airs. Both he and Wilson knew what it was for. So Zach reached inside to gather a bird, which remained so content and trusting as it was clutched in Zachs hand. He stroked it gently with his thumb, before bringing it to his face. Zach opened his mouth wide.
-
His belly was bulging even more than before. The birds had been small, but they had been entirely whole when theyd hit his stomach. It made sense that he was bloated from eating them all.
It was sort of embarrassing that his body showed blatant evidence of his recent meal, but the sensation was quite pleasing, to be honest. It felt good. Right, to be full.
Zach felt relaxed but focused during his scrabble game with Wilson. He tried to fill the board with esoteric words to stump the math-minded scientist. Zach had just found the perfect place to spell out the word ABSCOND and earn himself a triple-word score, when an itch in the back of his throat left him pausing to clear it. But the itch didnt go away, it just worsened, leaving him coughing and reaching for his water bottle. It felt like he had something stuck there, and he leaned down, hacking and choking slightly.
Are you alright, Zach? Wilson said, but Zach didnt respond, he just focused on clearing his throat.
Something was coming up. He knew he shouldnt have eaten those birds whole. There was no way he could digest it. Never mind the fact that it was, beyond rawlikely gave him food poisoning. He had been stupid and now he was retching. Oh god, was all he could think right before he regurgitated a clump of yellow.
Feathers
White fur.
And little pieces of animal bone.
Zach wrinkled his nose at the disgusting mound sitting right there on the scrabble board. He slowly looked up at Wilson who had a blank look on his face.
So you really did eat the canaries, Wilson mused aloud. And a small mouse? Based on that cervical vertebrae? Odd that you couldnt digest the bones
God, was all Zach could say, completely mortified. II didnt mean to
Zach, its alright, said Wilson hurriedly. Its more than alright. You ate. You did what you had to. What we needed you to do. Its nothing to be embarrassed about. Its just how you consume food now.
Zach nodded weakly.
Do you feel better at least? Sated?
Um said Zach, feeling flushed, and still rather queasy about the lump of bone and feather sitting there that had come right up his throat. I think. I mean, I I could probably still
Do you know that snakes prefer large prey? Wilson said as Zach trailed off. They can eat things several times their diameter. They dont eat oftenperhaps only weekly or so. Its why they prefer large meals. They store the food in their stomachs as they slowly digest it.
Again, Zach managed a nod.
So I encourage you to feed. And feed well, Zach, said Wilson. He stood and nonchalantly picked up the board game, with the clump of regurgitated feather and bone. Zach wasnt sure what he planned to do with it. Trash it? Study it? Zach didnt ask as Wilson walked towards the door with it. Nothing to be ashamed of. Shall we resume our game later?
Yeah said Zach.
Excellent, Zach. I dont expect you at dinner, but perhaps well have a chat tomorrow, after youve digested, some.
Er right. Zach felt his face heat more and he watched Wilson leave the room.
