"Yes, I would agree that it's becoming a commonality, Dick. The first ones supposedly were in hiding. But it looks like there's no hiding anymore," said the female news anchor.

"Good point, Stacy," Dick responded. "I admit, years back, I myself was dismissive of the rumors. But now it all seems to be blowing up—both figuratively and literally." He chuckled at his own joke.

John drank his coffee as he tried not to pay attention to the news program his partner was watching on the television.

"Over the past couple of decades, the cow-person phenomena was little but a rumor," a voice-over said as the screen showed images of women ducking away from the camera. "But it's no longer an urban legend. Countless men and women have spoken out in recent years—these cow people, as they’re referred, want to live openly."

"I never noticed I was different," a blonde woman appeared on the screen, speaking into a microphone that was being held up for her by a reporter. The woman had a flattened, animal-like nose. It reminded John of one of his sisters. "It all hit me at puberty, and...well...it wasn't easy."

The camera panned down to the woman's chest where two pairs of C-cups protruded in her sweater. "But I'm proud of who I am." The camera returned to the woman's face. "I'm not hiding anymore."

"Will you turn that off?" John groused.

Michael ignored him.

"No one knows where it started," the voiceover continued. "Some allege it’s a government conspiracy. Others believe the cow people are aliens."

"Genetic engineering." A woman in a lab coat appeared on the screen. The subtitle identified her as Dr. Blurgen, Cambridge Biologist. "Based on tests, these bovine-beings all share a common ancestor just a few generations down the line. The belief is that it all started with an experiment—the genetic splicing of human and bovine DNA. How it was achieved is beyond my understanding. Some scientists believe it's viral. Others have more extreme theories. The only certainty is that it isn't transmitted sexually, but infected cells do appear to transmit from mother to baby in-utero."

"Should the public be concerned about this?" An off-screen reporter asked Dr. Blurgen. "Understandably some people are starting to panic."

"Besides the cosmetic and sometimes, erm, ambulatory concerns, there doesn't appear to be significant health effects. Dehydration and malnutrition obviously. Bovine people, the carriers particularly, need more intake than others. Besides that is hard to say. There's still so much we don't understand."

The screen went back to the two news anchors. "I'm sure that will change soon. Though Rivertown appears to be the epicenter of this outbreak, there have been sightings of "cow boys" and "girls" as far as..."

Tuning the television out, John finished his coffee.

It had been fifty years since Lucas’ first litter and the world had decidedly changed.

Many of Lucas's descendants had spent their lives hiding in plain sight. Athletic tape, bandages, baggy clothes, and makeup seemed to do the trick. Some had even gone as far as getting cosmetic surgery.

For others, it was hard. Cow girls developed large breasts and udders at puberty. Cow boys had changes as well, albeit more subtle. They were muscular, rowdy, temperamental, and well-endowed between their thighs. In short, the perfect catch for the typical twenty-something girl. Lucas’s eight brothers had quite a number of descendants of their own.

Very scarcely, there was the cow boy like Lucas, whose gender shifted during puberty and enabled pregnancy. These men were considered “carriers.”

Still, there were cow people who didn’t have significant “indicators.” Some cow women had breasts so small that they were barely detectable through their clothes. Some had udders that had barely developed beyond being a smooth patch of pink skin on their pubic region, even in adulthood.

John had been inconspicuous for the most part. During adolescence, the development of two extra nipples and a patch of pink pubic skin had revealed the horrifying fact that he was a rare male carrier. But to his substantial relief, nothing had developed further. He had lived out his childhood with no patches or spots of discolorment, no fur, no tail, no cow ears or other deformities. He had passed through puberty and grown no detectable breasts or udders to speak of. Things had been quite easy for him as an adult, at least until he had fucked up and gotten pregnant.

God, what the hell had he been thinking, falling for Michael, being sexually active—he should have known this whole thing was doomed. They had always used protection, but somehow, the condoms and contraceptives had failed them. And there was nothing John could do.

When a cow-person became pregnant, they tended to balloon. Their breasts would swell until they were fully evident, as would their udder. Additionally, cow people tended to have heavy pregnancies with multiples. On average, they would have seven babies in their womb.

For John, it was already beginning, and it was frustrating. He lowered his latest cup of coffee and got up from his seat. “I’m running late,” he called to Michael as parting as he walked out the door and headed for his car.

Michael had always wanted children. Over the past year, they had given the adoption process a shot, and the wait was long—up to seven years. But they had kept pushing, kept their heads up. They were both young, only in their mid-twenties. There was plenty of time.

The discovery of John’s pregnancy had changed everything.

John had been willing to have children, but not at this cost. Upon discovering his pregnancy, he had hoped that since his cow-features had been minimal to start with, his pregnancy wouldn’t be too extreme. But as things seemed so far, he was just like the others. At only eight weeks along, his previously nonexistant breasts had swollen to B-cups—both pairs. The pink skin on his pubic region had plumpened until all his briefs had gotten tight. He could already see, and feel, a subtle fullness in his stomach, as though he had eaten too much recently, though this sensation was constant.

John had tried bounding his breasts with tape, but they were so tender. He had settled on two strapless sports bras a size too small. It helped somewhat, he supposed. He just hoped no one would notice the growing mound in the front of his ever-tightening trousers.

John was a defense attorney, and his high-profile job didn’t correspond well with the current changes he was undergoing. This became evident that afternoon when John’s secretary poked her head into his office.

“Mr. Sanders? Dirkman wants to see you in the main conference room.”

John didn’t look up from the papers he was signing. “Thanks, Sue.”

The secretary withdrew from his doorframe.

Though John had not outwardly reacted, he was internally panicking about what this was about. His boss never summoned him, which he considered a good thing. With a gulp, he lowered his pen and got up from his seat. He hesitated, and pulled on his blazer, even though he had been feeling heated lately. He then walked out the door and proceeded to the conference room.

When John entered the room, he saw that all three of the named partners were present, seated on one side of the table together. This wasn’t good. John took the seat opposite them.

Dirkman looked solemn. “John, thanks for coming. I’ll get straight to the point. Some of the other partners have taken a notice of your…condition.”

John’s chest constricted. Was it really that obvious already?

“We, er, hadn’t realized you had the gene. I wish you had told us so that we could set you up with the proper…accommodations.”

The cow phenomena had created a need for new protocols and laws, especially in the workplace. Many districts were signing new mandates into law, such as “pre-maternity leave” for a cow person’s often-strenuous pregnancy. But John was tough. He didn’t look for excuses for extra time off.

“Sir—” John started.

“Have you been evaluated by a doctor yet?” asked Matthew.

“No,” said John.

“How far along are you?” said Dirkman.

John hesitated. “Eight weeks,” he mumbled.

Though maintaining neutral expressions, the partners looked at each other. Reginald leaned over to Dirkman and whispered something into his ear. John knew they were surprised. Things really were progressing quickly.

When Dirkman spoke next, he was careful with his words. “You’re one of our best workers, John. Understandably, I feel a little blindsided. You were so ambitious.”

“Were?” said John.

“Most of the, um, people with your condition tend not to return to work after they have children,” Dirkman elaborated.

“I will,” said John firmly.

“Have you even done your research?”

John swallowed. Admittedly, he hadn't. He had wanted to think about it as little as possible. “I understand my condition isn't the most elegant, but—”

“We'll wait a little while, and then consult each other again,” Dirkman said, as though to compromise. “The firm is eager to accommodate all of your needs during this wonderful process,” he added flatly.

John stood. He felt mortified. He turned to leave, but had to stop himself. He turned back around. “Sir, I-I don’t understand. Am I being pushed out?”

“No, no, of course not,” said Matthew, standing as well. “We wouldn’t think of that. Of course not, John. As Dirkman said, you’re one of our best lawyers here. We support you fully. Please see us directly if there’s anything you need.” He gave his standard, charismatic smile.

Still feeling distraught, John left the room.
