Poll: Ren'py issues and which SDK to use going forward
Added 2021-03-04 22:33:03 +0000 UTCWith Chapter 14's development in full swing, I find myself needing to get an idea of where we're at everyone's ability to currently run the game. In light of the reported issues with 0.13.0 and the release of 0.13.1 to address this problem, I have to make a hard decision on which Ren'py SDK to use going forward.
Background History
Chapter 1 through 11 all ran on Ren'py 7.3.5. When 7.4.2 came out, I upgraded based on some of the options being touted. It generated the Android APK as a smaller package and in a shorter amount of time on my end. Both Chapters 12 and 13 ran on this SDK. Only when I started getting feedback about Chapter 13 not starting for some users did I look into rolling the SDK back as a fix. From what I've heard, 0.13.1 ran for these users.
This, unfortunately, created a whole new batch of issues.
First and foremost, rolling back the SDK (Software Development Kit) absolutely BROKE all of my saves, throwing a wrench into the startup on work for Chapter 14. And since I keep multiple versions of the game on my HDD for testing, it absolutely created a train-wreck where I had to purge hundreds of saves. While some of these saves could be loaded, often dropping the action back at the beginning of a scene (or even in the previous chapter), others were unusable, either crashing the game or going back to the start of Chapter 1.
Now & Then is not a complicated game by intent. Outside of fixing typos, grammar issues, and a few incorrect name tags, I haven't made any major code changes to the game since probably Chapter Nine. And it's not like the game is anything more than a script attached to a glorified slideshow. Take a look under the hood; there's not much there except some menu choices and decision flags. So this problem has created a real wrinkle. Luckily, I'm currently at a state where I don't need the SDK for much. Mostly, I'm working in Photoshop, Premier Pro, Honey Select, and Atom for the immediate future.
My plan so far?
I've got a BETA of the latest SDK (7.4.3) that I hope might address the issues users were having with starting the game. If not, it should theoretically at least let most users play the game, using saves they already have. Then, I might have to create an "old version" (ran in 7.3.5) for distribution on request after the standard release is out for everyone.
The alternative option is less attractive. Run 0.14.0 in Ren'py 7.3.5 so that just about everyone can run it. The drawback is that this'll basically ruin saves for everyone who didn't just play 0.13.1 (and maybe if they didn't play since a couple versions back). I HATE this option because I've seen too many devs basically force players to restart their games just about every time they release a new version and I'm just not a fan of that. I can understand needing to make major code overhauls and there's going to be issues with developing games in a clear BETA state. Still, it's a thing I want to avoid, if possible.
So, the poll is purely informational for me, to see how many people might be impacted by the eventual decision. I just want to get an idea of who got the game to play in the initial release (0.13.0) versus the rolled-back version (0.13.1).

That seems like the prevailing scenario so far.

2021-03-06 21:26:43 +0000 UTCI tried 13.1 first and it broke. So, I tried 13 and it worked.

2021-03-05 21:23:58 +0000 UTCGame played fine from my saves with no problem. I was even able to go back a few chapters and play forward. I hope this information is helpful.

2021-03-05 02:16:13 +0000 UTCN&T 0.13 worked fine for me, but other games often break with Ren'py 7.4, so I don't have much faith in future updates. I downloaded the 7.4 SDK to run such games without building/packaging them, and that always works. It's a hassle though. But, again, not for N&T 0.13.

2021-03-05 00:36:36 +0000 UTCWe have talked about this on discord. We can look at it on next release if i have the same issues. I will hit you up.
2021-03-04 23:53:43 +0000 UTCIf I recall correctly, you'd mentioned issues with earlier releases like this. Unfortunately, I'm sure that 13.1 probably won't resolve that issue (it's the same SDK as everything prior to Ch12). I'd like to say part of the reason I updated to 7.4.2 was to see if it'd fix this, but that'd be a fib. Still, if it did... it'd be a nice side-effect. Sorry that this continues to be an issue for you.
