Star Trek: The Original Series - "This Side of Paradise" Full Reaction!

Very lovely poem! Thank you for sharing :)

You gave an unusual reaction, here's mine. I began watching Star Trek first run, then regularly nearly every day after that as reruns during my school years. By the time I reached High School I had seen this episode dozens of times. In my English Composition class we were tasked with writing a traditional sonnet. Fourteen lines with ABBA ABBA CDECDE rhyming pattern. Extra credit if we used metaphor, and extra extra credit if it taught a lesson. I used this epidode as a basis. Here we go... As a ship sails the churning sea, Requiring wind to fill the sail, Voyaging miles with every gale, She must fight the waves to be free. Yet the currents that fight her are the key, For without the water her mission would fail. She'd sit on the floor of a waterless jail, And the need for ships would not be. And in the same manner we go through life, Fighting the ever-present pain. If only it could be understood Our existence requires constant strife, As the ship requires the bounding main, To know when the times are good. ----- May you always know when the times are good.

John DiGiantomasso

She really loved Spock…and this experience allowed him a temporary window into those feelings. And a great debate on contentment and the need challenge. Love your analysis and thoughts, especially the science experiment. An interesting book by a zoologist is ‘the human zoo’ by Desmond morris. His previous book ‘the naked ape’ created quite a stir as he examined human behaviour as he would primates..

I always thought Star Trek fans were considerate and reserved, so maybe it's the YouTube normies constantly ruining things. I've noticed across many reactors and even just random creators that YouTube comments are usually batsh*t ridiculous, so that has to be it. lol

Thanks for understanding!

THE JUMPSCARES MAN!!

I might have to check out this book sometime!

bunnytails

I'm eager for more!

I just read Mark's comment about this possibly being an option for Pike! I think you guys might be on to something here!

My current self is really feeling like Kirk is the heart of this series. But I would be remiss to not admit that Nimoy does bring a certain sexual magnetism to the show. :P

bunnytails

I wonder!!! That would be an even better solution for him, though probably somewhat less impactful for the audience I think.

bunnytails

Hahaha YES the accent!

bunnytails

Yes, that would make a lot of sense!

bunnytails

I didn't even think about it from the "don't do drugs" angle! But yeah, I can totally see that now!

bunnytails

Thanks!

Thanks a lot! Glad you've been enjoying! Basically people are overhyping an episode and I am worried it will make it hard for me to enjoy it normally. I'd like this to be the last time it happens. Oh btw, what did you think of the experiment? Pretty interesting stuff, huh?

This was another episode written by the Great D. C. Fontana. Some of the best and most thoughtful episodes.

Carlos Stevens

Copy that, Bunny. 10-4! Just enjoy the episodes, the writing, the LIGHTING, and the uniforms. 😊 🖖. I know the episodes. It's YOUR reaction and appreciation of the show. It's great fun for me, like watching it for the first time again. One thing I have always wondered about. What would have happened had the injured Christopher Pike had been taken to this planet? In time, might he have been healed by exposure to the spores?

Mark Chrisco

I always wondered whether the Federation might still allow a colony on the planet, with people voluntarily living under the influence of the spores. Certainly it's not the right fit for Starfleet officers, nor for an agricultural colony (or any other kind of productive colony), but I could imagine it as a desirable alternative for some people (especially those with catastrophic illness or injuries that could be helped by the spores, or truly traumatic histories that would benefit from the peace of mind the spores' lifestyle would offer, etc.).

This episode was a turning point for the Spock character. The unrequited love story and Nimoy's chemistry with Jill Ireland especially resonated with female viewers. From this point on the fan mail for Nimoy began to equal, then greatly surpass that of Shatner. Leading to the question of who was really the star of the series.

Mark Chrisco

A solid episode imo. A good sci-fi concept, simple and well executed plot-wise. Not exactly a lot of high tension but that's fine once in a while. Good character acting from our three main boys. Obviously smiling, lovey-dovey Spock gets all the attention here as he should, but can we talk about Bones and his southern accent in ths one? *Living* for it! I adore Dee Kelley as McCoy and getting to hear him call Kirk "Jim-boy" in that drawl is just every-damn-thing.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I've heard that this episode was intended as a bit of a commentary on the negative impact of drugs on incentive, ambition, society formation, etc.. This was the 1960s, after all -- and we were dealing with a massive move into drug use. Not sure if this was indeed the INTENT of the writers, but I suspect that it was.

Tom Occhipinti

I was waiting for your reaction to this episode all week. o_o I really gained a new appreciation for it recently, and I thought you would like it, which you did. My father (and other Trekkies) considered this the "don't do drugs" episode. That taking drugs/shrooms to make you happy and forget your responsibilities is bad. So considering the hippie culture time period this episode was made, I kinda see what they were going for.

SuicuneSol

I absolutely LOVE these TOS reaction videos of yours and always look forward to each one. Terrific insights. I've watched all of the episodes many, many times over the years, and it brings something new to every episode to watch your genuine and insightful reactions. I envy your being able to watch them yourself for the first time. I've never heard of the Calhoun experiment. That, in itself, is a new insight to the episode for me. Thank you! i can't wait for the next one.

J. Scott Phillips

I hope you haven't been spoiled too much by commenters. I'm new to your channel, but I'm very much enjoying your reactions. You have some very insightful views and pick up on a lot of little details. Thanks for the pointer to the Calhoun experiment. I love learning about things like that. I have a video up on that now!

This is a 'meh' episode for me, good idea and characters, just poorly executed I thought and kind of a slow and plodding script. Earth class planets are known as 'M' Class planets to use the Star Trek lingo. All planets are classified into 'letter' classes. You will hear M class the most though. It was funny seeing how many times this episode gave you a jump scare. LOL Once again we see that Kirk's strong love for the Enterprise was enough to 'save' him -- to provoke such strong feelings that he could throw off the effect of the spores. Constitution class starships (which the Enterprise is one of them) were considered to be 'cramped' ships with the 430 or so crew that they carried, but yes, I totally agree this episode shows how important that all of that crew is and how big and empty the ship can feel without them.

Greg Polander

I've listened to a fair number of TOS podcasts and I can say with absolute certainty that none of them brought John Calhoun's experiments into the discussion of this episode. Kudos for making that connection, Bunny! Your reaction/analysis is truly one of a kind, not only entertaining but very insightful. Your admonition not to say anything about future episodes came at the right time. I'll confess that I was on the precipice of making some observations about the relative merits of Season One and Season Two. But why say anything and deprive you of the only chance you'll have to make up your own mind, free of outside influence? Thanks for saving me from potentially diminishing your enjoyment of classic Star Trek.
