My Top 10 Star Trek: TOS Episodes (season 1)!
Added 2024-01-26 19:00:07 +0000 UTC
This was SO hard to make! There is something to enjoy from each and every episode!
What does your top 10 look like?
It's funny, Trelane was a bit annoying to me when I first watched The Squire of Gothos, and I didn't care for the episode too much compared to others.
But I am finding myself looking back on Trelane in a positive/nostalgic light. The actor really did splendidly bringing that character to life. It's interesting how our viewpoint of certain episodes can change over time.

My list, as a child of the 60s and 70s... My only criteria would be my likelihood to watch them again if I came across them randomly.
Devil in the Dark
Balance of Terror
The Menagerie
A Taste of Armagedfon
Shore Leave
Court Martial
Errand of Mercy
Arena
City on the Edge of Forever
The Squire of Gothos

Your #1 totally surprised me. But you see that's the beauty of it.
I don't want to tell young people which episodes they should like. I want them to watch and tell me which they like, because it may reflect a viewpoint I'm not aware of.
That, for instance, you may value HOPE more than tragedy, because these days things are looking kinda hopeless in regard to the ecosystem and national/international civility. My faves both reflect despair (CITY ON THE EDGE and THE MENAGERIE tie for my #1s.)
My wife believes YOUR #1 may also reflect how the horror genre is more widely embraced this decade than it was decades ago.
Bunny, if you see these words, I once posted an idea for you on YouTube. What I believe is an exciting idea and you still have time to consider it. Please tell me if you at least saw this idea so that I won't keep reposting it, lol.
THE PREMISE
Once you're done with the original Star Trek, you'll never quite experience this quality again. People like me would cry in joy to learn the Roddenberrys had hidden 4 solid Season '4' episodes and that we'd get to see 'new' original Trek episodes.
THE IDEA
I don't want to name them yet, but I'd propose you skip 4 episodes from Season 3. Then, on your birthday each year, you gift yourself one oldie but goodie that's new to you. If interested, send me a private message and I'll list the 4. If not, that's cool too. Just an idea.

Yeah, having episodes over (or under) hyped before you can even see them is a real loss. I know other people have suggested it, but if you can find the time, going back to re-watch Space Speed NOW and posting a few minutes comments about how your view is same/different now that you have more understanding of the franchise and characters would be awesome!

Sad and maybe a bit ironic that her death was needed to create the future she envisioned. :(

I think people overhyped Balance of Terror a bit too much for me which is disappointing. As for Space Seed, I wonder if I had watched it in its proper place in the season if my view on it would be different.

Great job understanding what really matters here. What Edith Keeler's death allowed was just what we saw in the landing party. A future where a full cross section of humanity and aliens can work together in harmony.

While you're at it, how about doing your 10 least favorite episodes?

Bunny, I must have watched all the episodes of The Original Series 30 times each (back in the day when there were only 5 channels, reruns were a thing). I can honestly say, re-watching these again one more time with you, I am seeing these episodes from an entirely new perspective. I am seeing things I completely missed before.

Off the top of my head top 10 personal favourites starting with the sure things then a little more interchangeable as we go:
Balance of Terror (I'm sure you could have guessed that one lol)
The Galileo Seven
Devil in the Dark
The Corbomite Maneuver
Space Seed
Arena
City on the Edge of Forever
The Squire of Gothos
The Menagerie 1 and 2
The Conscience of the King and Errand of Mercy as honourable mentions
I tend to gravitate towards the high tension episodes as my favourites although the sillier ones often run a close second tier. I love dramatic tv acting but I also adore when a show finds ways to not take itself too seriously for an episode.
I can feel myself wanting to just go on and on about the why's and wherefore's of my love for Star Trek, so credit to your top ten video for setting my brain to spinning like this lol. But I'm already going long so I'll try and fit those thoughts into future comments. Can't wait for season 2, B, see you then!

I can totally understand how difficult it can be to come up with a top 10 list. Overall, I really liked your list and agree with many of your choices, even if I would rank them up or down differently on my list.
The only episodes I would include in my Top 10 that you did not are Space Seed and Balance of Terror.

The City on the Edge of Forever is the best of all TOS, in my opinion.

One thing I never hear discussed about the end of "The City on the Edge of Forever" is Kirk's line, "Let's get the hell out of here."
While it remains sombre today, it has lost the shocking impact it had when first aired. Back then, one did not say "Hell" or "Damn" on TV. So, when Kirk said "Let's get the hell out of here," the audience KNEW how much Kirk was hurting. In today's world, he might as well have said "Let's get the f*ck out of here" to even come close to how we reacted to Kirk's line back in 1967. A truly impactful moment and one that, unfortunately, pretty much rolls off our backs today.
Thanks for your Top 10. Looking forward to Season 2!

As much as I enjoy your reactions and the discussion that follows, this opportunity to expand the analysis is just as delightful. Would love to see more videos where you talk about any Trek episodes (or related subjects) that interest you. I love hearing your thoughts on what are presently your favorite episodes, but there's no need to rank them if you don't want to.

Really surprised by #1! As someone who has lived almost 60 years as a Trek fan and remembers when TOS was the only Trek their was, I am really loving your fresh perspective on it, and getting to relive watching these episodes again for the first time.
