My interpretation of this is (based on what I know of Steven King and the motifs he puts in his novels/movies)... John Coffey was a fallen angle who was seeking redemption. Thus he knew his only path to redemption was to sacrifice himself, much in the same way Jesus sacrificed himself. "John Coffey"..."J...C..." Typical Steven King.
