Hey, Bunny! Thanks for letting your comments "run amok." Most entertaining.
This, to me, is "Peak Star Trek." Great story, great script, great acting, great sets and props, and most of all, great music. It is amazing when it all comes together.
My favorite part? When Kirk is handed the second weapon, looks down and is thoroughly confused. He brilliantly communicates without words, "What the HELL is THIS thing?!"
And it is best when Star Trek doesn't answer all the questions. Great stories should have lots of unexplained thinga to let the reader/viewer create their own theories or solutions. And, ceveral times here you did ask "What's that?" Wonder. Enjoy it.
That said, this is NOT my favorite episode. My absolute all-time favorite is just a handful away. And there are so many that are so good.
They kinda sorta have to be good to still be resonating more than fifty years later.
As so many have said before, it is amazing to see these well-loved and well-worn stories once again through fresh eyes.
Thank you.

I love your love of their friendship.....The main plot hole that I still can't accept in this classic episode is that they surely would have told Kirk it was a fight to the death.

Your PORN STAR reaction was HILARIOUS. Every time we watch an episode with you, I see it thru your eyes. And by doing so I noticed two odd things I've never noticed before --
1. There's nothing creepy about a moody as hell Spock demanding he be left alone in his quarters so that he can gaze upon a Vulcan female child
2. In the final scene, where McCoy says, "In a pig's eye!" look directly behind him and... halfway up the wall... is a green lizard with bright red eyes.

I imagine McCoy had a variety of medicines in his medical satchel and probably mixed it up "off-screen".

My takeaway from how the pon farr mating drive eventually left Spock was that it was tied back to what McCoy described as the adrenaline-like substance that was running through Spock's body. Since that sort of life and death struggle has a similar sort of caveman brain thing going on as the way the they were talking about the mating drive the adrenaline got used up and our boy came down from being so out of it.

I've been struggling with this. The subtitles in season 2 just seem way off. I turned them off when I watched Friday's Child and I missed some key dialogue because I couldn't hear clearly. I'm not sure what I should do about this and it's really frustrating.

I don't know why T'Pring would pick a guy with such ludicrous ears lol. Spock's room reflected the red hues of his home planet.

I fell in love with T'Pring as a 10yo and I still love her at 67. I have to wonder how her and Stonn wound up. A little worried about you Bunny! Dungeon, BDSM, porn star, blueballs? What happened to our sweet, innocent Miss Tails?

Nope, she said, "If both survive the lirpa... ...combat will continue with the ahn'woon.." (Meaning: "One of them is going to die, eventually.")
I was about 7 years old when I saw this episode for the first time..... around 1974. I cried when Kirk "died," and punched Spock's face on the TV screen.

I think this is my favorite episode in the TOS. For the full effect, I literrally had to watch it twice. Love the music. love the Vulcan lore, love he casting, love the juxtaposition between Kirk and Spock, Love the lady that played T'Pau (did you notice that male Vulcan names start with an "S" where female names start with "T'P?

BTW, has anyone else noticed that the subtitles are off by at least a few seconds in every episode? It's very distracting.

Yes, this one I dubbed with the alternate title of, "Spock Gets a Boner" of which my friends agreed.
A very entertaining episode. I thought your mishearing of pon farr as Pron Star was hilarious.

This was the S2 opener. I'm glad you liked it despite everyone hyping it up.
My favorite parody of this episode is probably in the Jim Carrey movie Cable Guy.

One of my stone favourite episodes. I won't spend too much time on a lot of the stuff I usually would since you pointed it all out yourself, B. The plot, writing, acting, lore, all excellent like you mentioned. But just a quick shoutout to the music and directing/production that do so much to heighten the tensions and give us a sense of how embarrassed and uncomfortable Spock is. Also I'm av big fan of the shakey cam/POV stuff during the fight scene, it really makes the whole thing so much more intense. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much :)
Fun fact, this is the first time we see the now-iconic Vulcan salute 🖖 Live long and prosper! Until next time 🙂

Thanks for a great reaction ♥️Me and my friends grew up on Star Trek. When u started to talk about Kirk and Spock relationship, I freakin lost it, cried like a baby. I lost my best friend to cancer. The relationships on Star Trek are amazing 😻

This episode sets in motion alot of Vulcan canon to come in all "flavors" of Star Trek for the next fifty plus years. They have all stayed pretty true to what Vulcans are. Star Trek Enterprise and Star Trek Strange New Worlds both have expanded Vulcan background extensively.
T'Pau was chosen for the name by a British rock group in the 1980's. They had a #4 hit with "Heart and Soul"

PS I think the phrase you were trying to remember was "bumping uglies"

Yes, indeed. The friendships were on full display in this episode. Even when Spock was at his craziest and before Kirk knew the real problem, he trusted Spock enough to change course to Vulcan without question. Once he understood the problem, he was still willing to sacrifice his career for him. And we all know how much his career meant to him. And after Spock tried to kill him, he understands completely, shrugs and says, "C'mon, Spock. Let's go mind the store." What a pal!

First of all, Bunny, thanks as always for another great reaction! You made me a laugh a lot more in this reaction then I thought you would. :)
This is either (depending on the day you ask me) in my top 10 list of episodes of the original series or JUST behind it. It's easy to see why NBC decided to open season two with this episode, they knew they had a winner.
A lot of firsts in this episode -- first time seeing Vulcan, first time the Vulcan Salute is used (something Nimoy came up with himself for the episode, based on a similar Jewish symbol), first time we heard the related catch phrase 'Live Long and Prosper', and the first time the battle music is heard (during the duel to the death) which was used not only in future episodes but also parodied in the movie The Cable Guy.
And of course, the first time the idea of Pon Farr is mentioned, along with a lot of backstory about Spock, his family, and the people of Vulcan. I'm sure you won't be surprised if I tell you all of that is referenced numerous times in future shows.
They didn't have everything thought out and explained in this first episode, so to expand I'll say this -- Pon Farr is a very strong Vulcan mating drive, which happens (usually) once every seven years to every Vulcan male. If they don't have a mate, they take one during this time, if they do, spending time with her is sufficient to get rid of the urges. Medicine can treat it for a while, but sooner or later the urge HAS to be sated, or (as McCoy said) death will happen.
Speaking about McCoy, neither he nor Kirk knew the fight was going to be to the death, so I assume the drug that he injected Kirk was something he carried around as part of his normal medical kit, perhaps a knockout drug.
Once again more strong guest appearances in this episode from Celia Lovsky (as T'Pau) and Arlene Martel (as T'Pring). The Vulcan Salute is NOT easy to make (I can't do it myself, so major props to you being able to nail it!) so to help out Celia they taped her fingers together during the scenes when she had to do one.
Finally, I love that line that Spock uses -- 'Having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting, it is not logical, but often true'. I use it a lot in my normal life as it really lands with me.

Yeppers, a fan favorite also here. Great reaction, LOL "Spocky Boy? " "Porn Star, ?" Pon Farr. 😊 🖖 I have always liked this storyline. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'll bet others did as well. The Camera works really well. I watched a Mario game last week and it was dialed in good > I'm no gamer and it was fun to watch something different.
