"I, Mudd" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Original Series Season 2

Comments

I never had much of a reaction to this one other than just enjoying its silliness. I don't try to overthink it other than saying, "Hey Norman! Maybe Kirk is lying about Harry Mudd. Did you ever think about that, you asshole?" Sheesh. How did they ever live 500 years anyway? I read in production note tales that casting put out ads in Hollywood looking for twins to appear in this episode. It saved money on split screen effects.

The Mudd episodes were not my favorite early on, but they've grown on me over the years. Been a lot of fun seeing your reaction though. It's been a though week with my wife getting scheduled for a pacemaker and my son getting a cancer diagnosis. This bit a happiness was a welcome reprieve.

The purple and orange hues are/were used in stage lighting to convey an other worldly kind of mood. Much of stage lighting practice carried over into television during the 50s 60s and 70s. After the 80s, they started using different more advanced other than lighting techniques to set mood.

I have clear memories of watching this while visiting my grandparents house in Chicago back in the early 80s. My mom kept cracking up; such a fun episode

OMG! There is all kinds of Star Trek Fan Fiction out there. But I don't know of anything where they did an intersection between I Mudd and Who Morns For Adonis. However.... (never mind I'm not saying anything). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26VAi9xhZKI

Sigh...Ok so you knew about this episode... Y'All Talk too Much!

Ha Ha Ha, i was waiting for Bunny to see this episode. I'm hoping no one spoiled it for you.

Watching the Enterprise landing party gaslight the aliens is a fun episode. Terrific job. Thanks.

Heh, I'm doing OK, Bunny. Made myself a chicken nugget sandwich on ciabatta with coleslaw and Ghost Pepper Chips for today's episode. The usual fancy lunch for Star Trek Fridays. I've never really watched this episode as I don't like Harry Mudd at all. But that performance near the end of the episode nearly made my day. I'm glad I watched it.

Great reaction, Bunny - super happy you had a fun time with this one ("abnormal abdomen" lol). It's one of my favorites and probably the first episode to lean mostly on comedy (to great effect) and I also feel it's one of the most unique episodes of the original 79-- the cast is nearly winking at the viewer and their joy is evident through their performances making it, as you say, very re-watchable : )

I've never been a fan of the Mudd episodes. They've always struck me as silly, "I Mudd" especially. Just like you felt about Scotty in "Who Mourns for Adonais," I felt this episode is out of character for the series as a whole. But your reaction made up for a lot of that. And your ideas of combining elements from this with the Apple people (the People of Vaal) or Apollo were great. You mentioned fan fiction along those lines. "Star Trek Continues" and Star Trek: Phase II" often do stuff just like that, combining concepts from various episodes and creating excellent new stories. I wasn't looking forward to watching "I, Mudd" again, but your video was great. Keep it up, and thanks for getting me to enjoy this episode after all.

Another great episode, and another great reaction. As always it's been amazing watching you react to these for the first time, and even something I've seen a hundred times you find a way to breathe fresh air into it. I agree with most of your thoughts on this episode. This is the ONLY time the Original Series does a 'sequel' episode, but they do it a lot more in the later shows and movies. I haven't watched a lot of 60's TV so I can't say for sure if sequels just were not commonly done in those days compared to now. The ideas behind this episode are not new -- they were already debated and talked about before this episode was made and continue to be so today -- but it's fun to see them in a Star Trek light. Just off the top of my head, I'm reminded of Wall-E, the Nier games, Detroit: Become Human, and System Shock as other forms of media where some of the ideas and concepts from this game are explored and covered. It also reminds me of the (as of now unofficial) Vault 69 (heh) from Fallout. I'm not sure where the idea originally came from, but for some fan fiction someone created the idea of Vault 69 where there was only 1 guy for 500 girls. While that sounds great at first look and in theory, it doesn't take long for people to realize just how madding that would get after a while and all the problems associated with it. Speaking about fan fiction -- Star Trek fan fiction goes totally off the rails. Not only has everything happened you talked about, but even more! Hell, I even wrote some fan fiction myself in my younger days. As I'm sure you know by now, it's a very passionate fan base. I do agree the ending is a bit dark. Perhaps Mudd deserved it. As Kirk said, the idea behind it was to make sure he didn't take advantage of the other androids as he had been doing, and to help motivate him to push the planet along in it's 'development'. What that is, I don't know, but clearly he'd be motivated to work super hard so he could get away from all those Stellas! And yes, anytime we get to see the cast act out of character is a hoot.
