The Godfather - Full Movie Reaction!

Wow! It's so neat to hear stories like these!

If you want to watch more mafia movies, I'd suggest "Bugsy" (1992). It tells how the mafia started Las Vegas as we know it today. The Godfather ends with the Corleones starting Las Vegas with the rest of the mafia. Moe Green is based upon the main character of "Bugsy", Bugsy Siegel. Martin Scorsese's "Casino" (1995) shows how the mafia was kicked out of Las Vegas. The Godfather Part 3 takes place before the incidents portrayed in "Casino".

There is an old saying in acting that you should never work with children or animals because they are too unpredictable and undisciplined. Marlon Brando's performance in the Godfather is famous for defying that rule in his first and last scenes. His first scene has him delivering his lines while holding a stray cat he found on set. The cat was never in the script, but Brando delivers his lines flawlessly while keeping the cat perfectly calm, demonstrating Don Corleone's powerful control over every situation. In his last scene, Brando has the same control over the child playing his grandson as carries out Vito's death. According to Coppola, that child was starting to become impatient until Brando had him mesmerized with his orange peel improvisation. This is why Marlon Brando is often called the greatest actor who ever lived. Marlon Brando was above the traditional rules of acting that all other actors were forced to follow.

Don't worry about reading King Lear. I only point it out because it helps to enjoy the film more. I noticed that those of us who studied King Lear enjoyed Part 3 a lot more than everybody else who didn't because it shows Michael at the same age as King Lear, an old guy coming to terms with all of the terrible things that he's done to acquire and hold onto power. It's also fascinating to see how elite writers, like Coppola, will use the themes of classics that have stood strong for hundreds of years to help them write strong modern screenplays without reinventing the wheel.

Such a great reaction. This movie really takes you on a journey, and Michael is one of the best characters I have ever seen in a movie.

Thanks very much!

Haha I dunno why I reacted like that with the Apollonia scene but I was highly upset in the moment. XD

I am unfamiliar with King Lear, I will try to go read it if I remember/can find time.

I am happy you enjoyed it! It really surpassed my expectations!

It was fun to get dressed up for this one, with the exception of burning myself immediately beforehand, as you know. :(

As always a pleasure to watch with you Bunny. All the Godfather films are near to my heart, glad you enjoyed this one. It is pure cinema magic.

Michael Roach

You did an outstanding job in your reaction and review. Smart to keep the subtitles on to keep track of all the names being tossed around in the dialogue. You're the first reaction to catch Talia Shire as Connie and Adrian. You had the best jump scare I've seen so far with the death of Apollonia. You're the first reaction I've seen to immediately catch how Apollonia's death triggers Michael into becoming the monster that he was not at the beginning of the movie. One of the few movies where the hero and the villain are the same person with the intentional moral conflict and ambiguity that is resolved in the last film.

Without spoiling, it helps to know that the Godfather films were designed by Puzo and Coppola as a masculine version of Shakespeare's "King Lear". People who don't understand Shakespeare or King Lear usually misinterpret Parts 1 & 2 as some idiotic anthems for wife beating and toxic masculinity, then become very lost during Part 3. Michael obviously begins Part 1 as Cordelia, proving his love for Vito as the child on the outside, but ends up taking the role of Lear. Instead of daughters, Vito plans for the future of his family and kingdom with his sons. Part 2 develops the primary theme of emotional/moral blindness that is usually associated with King Lear and Gloucester. Part 3 uses the King Lear model to complete the narrative thread with a definitive ending and a clear moral to the story common to the Shakespearean tradition, but missing in the first two films.

Johnny fontaine was based on Frank Sinatra and how the mob helped him when his career faltered.

As one of the people who recommended this movie I can't express how happy it makes us to see that you enjoyed it. Worth a year of Patreon subscriptions at least!! (P.S. -- In light of the serious events of yesterday (President Trump), I can't help but noting, in a movie context, that in Mark Wahlberg's movie "SHOOTER" (2007), the first part of the movie is taken up by an EXHAUSTIVE discussion of how a professional would evaluate ALL POSSIBLE sniper security risks to a speaker giving an outdoor address (vantage points, distance, wind, concealment, escape routes, etc. etc. -- it just goes on and on), exactly what the Secret Service DID NOT DO yesterday. You could watch the movie and do a better job!! Check it out if you haven't already!) Love & Peace!

SCTV had a skit where Floyd the Barber from Andy Griffith goes to the Godfather (Guy Caballero), asking for justice on the kids who broke his barber pole. I was impressed by James Caan's portrayal of Sonny. He was pretty crazy, of course not when compared to his brother or the next generation. I observed that Apollonia, Michael's Sicilian wife, was wearing a body stocking for her nude scene. That was seen in movies when the actress was underage, more in Europe than America. It's a great depiction of old country society. The verbal agreements, the honor code, all the time avoiding contract law and government regulations. The mafia viewed it as more civilized to use networks and client relationships than resorting to the authorities. I love the early scenes. Brando could not have been in it enough. But that wasn't the purpose of the movie, which was to show the fall of Don Corleone's world, and the accession of Michael, who destroyed it all. Bunny is exceptionally beautiful and dressed to the nines. Loved her comments!
