Cypress Web Trap (Updated)

It was a long time coming, but after glaring at the many issues with this piece, I finally decided to make the necessary changes that I felt were holding it back. Here's a bit of a breakdown of what I did, and why I did it.

For one, the colour initially felt very muddy. Everything was skewed too far to the yellows, and the palette with mostly greens and purples, became somewhat unpleasant to look at. Therefore, those needed to change first. I cooled down the entire piece putting it more in the blue range, vs the warm yellows from before, making the teal colours work very well with the purples as well at the splashes of yellow and red. It's a more pleasing palette for the eye, but also gives a more chilling effect to it as well, which I think contrasts nicely with the light humour in it.

Next, I tackled the area surrounding Cypess, mainly the webbing and the spiders. The webbing was way too crisp near the edges of the piece, which would in turn draw focus away from what should be the central focus (The large Moo-man himself.) So I softened those a bit, all around the perimeter of the painting. I also removed the small spiders (Sorry little buddies) because they made the piece too busy and honestly were not subtle enough. I much prefer the larger one alone, slightly obscured in the background.

With Cypress, many changes were made, but they almost all had to do with anatomical issues. The hamstrings were not accurate at all, so I had to essentially paint over those. While working them, I also realized that I should reduce some of the muscle definition, as he looks pretty relaxed at this point (by this, I mean the muscles. Cypress is clearly not pleased xD.) The more tensed muscles would have worked better if he looked like he was struggling. Other than the legs, I shrank his head just a tad for proportional reasons, and made his lat a little wider. Some other small adjustments were made, here and there, but they were very minor. Besides overall anatomy, I brought up his subligar a bit more at the back. They were a bit too long in the leg area.

That's pretty much it, though! I was hesitant at first, but I'm kind of glad I went back and made the changes. I hope you guys like the new version and enjoyed the breakdown! There's a gif included as well, if you's like to see all of the changes made at once.

Thanks again, and I hope everyone has a happy Sunday!

Take care!

The colors really are a stark contrast to the original. Seeing them side by side, the yellow/green one really does hurt my eyes a little seeing it. Its neat seeing the process of changing the colors to better fit. I like it! Who is going to help Cypress though?

I think these were some great changes tho I'd say both the original and the remake are so good! I love that you went into detail over the changes you made it helped see them perfectly! Keep up the great work Taran!

I think the changes work more. Now that you mention it, I do agree that the yellow tinge makes it kinda muddy (It did give sorta ghoulish vibes - think Minas Morgul from Lord of the Rings, but that's more green). Great work!

Halkyov

Yah I agree the changes are a lot nicer. More natural and various over the swampy pallet used previously.

This is an amazing update, it's great to see them side-by-side and how much impact your changes have. Thanks a bunch for sharing your thoughts on it as well, this was a fascinating read into your process and much appreciated :D
