Very illuminating! I think it's actually helped me as I've been leaning a bit more structural and have noticed some stiffness in my own work. Thank you for your explanation!

Yes! I think you guys got most of it, but essentially I am doing stuff in a more gestural way purposely to avoid that mentioned “stiffness.” The thing is you can always build a structure on the more loose gestures, but it’s a lot more difficult to do the reverse. And if something is too exaggerated for the pose that I want, I can always tighten the pose a bit more as I’m building on top of it. Also, the really cool thing about doing gestures is that because they are loose, you can lay down a bunch of them very quickly so that you can go through several ideas before chosing one that you like. I lot of times, I’ll have a very rough idea for what I want, but the composition/ posing is not so concrete. However going through multiple ideas quickly helps to narrow it down. (I hardly ever end up going with my first gesture or idea) Now with that said, doing a more structured approach first is good for learning the forms and great if you’re working off of a reference. And you can always go back and forth if you end up learning one before the other. 👍 Sorry for the ramble, I hope that helps a bit! 😊

Thanks for your response. I guess the way I'd put it is that most of the gesture I've seen focuses on the underlying structure; e.g. when I draw the torso of a figure, I usually start with a spherical shape (and cut out a bit for the ribcage flare) , and then sorta draw the shapes of the body "around" that. Working sorta inside-out, if that makes sense. I was surprised to see Taran Fiddler's approach starting outside in, and wondered if he was developing gesture at that stage, or was he following a gesture in his mind?

I'm obviously not TFiddler art but I've been paying a lot of attention to their process, they make dozens of adjustments throughout the process. And their first sketch is very gestural but it only takes up a tiny amount of the timelapse and is easy to miss.

So this is something I've been wondering, having seen a bunch of your drawing processes. I've seen a lot of artists start by drawing a sorta skeleton, or a gesture sketch, and then sorta "bulk in" the forms around the linework (this is also sorta my approach. You're one of the few I've seen who goes straight for the forms. Usually that tends to stiffen drawings but yours are dynamic. Do you sort of "work out" the pose/gesture as you go, or do you have one in mind and you adjust afterward to "fit" it?
