Jojo Whale Final!

And here it is!The final piece for the Jojo's Bizarre Adventures Orca Drawing! It was fun getting to experiment with Leyendecker's style a bit. I think after looking at enough of his paintings I can see why so many people love his work. He's easily become a top on my list throughout this process xD

Also, just wanted to say thank you to you guys for the help with this one. It was very much a tough decision, but I think you made the right call ;)

Sorry for the late-ish reply (phone app doesn't work on replies), but I suspected it was the hatching, though now if I go back through looking at some of Leyendecker's work, I bet I'd notice some of the faceting you were mentioning. I do need to look more into Leyendecker; Loomis talks highly of him in his books. As to intent... the obvious possibility is that he's making his work intentionally stylized, though in a more subtle way than, say, the flattened art nouveau style of Alphonse Mucha. He's emphasizing brush strokes. The other thing I've noticed once or twice is that the hatching colors are slightly "off" and slightly more vibrant. If they're over a blue shirt, it might be off in being more green or purple (off not in value or saturation, but hue/chroma), which I think makes the piece "vibrate" or "buzz" (a school art teacher mentioned some Impressionist painters did this, adding flecks of red or orange into grass to simulate sunlight, and used the term "buzz" to describe the sorta dissonant color). I guess it could sort of be like composers making one or two notes of a piece deliberately dissonant to make them stand out (like the end of act two of Tristan und Isolde) or adding slight dissonance into a piece to make a feeling of unease. In this case, it sorta "pops" the color. But that's just some speculation. It looks great, and you did a really nice job on this!

Push throuuugghhh👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 the fruity Jojo whale is so charismatic and animated, amazing job Taran! Oh also I really like the hatching lines on this, I don’t think I usually see them this much when you paint over the sketches, but it really helps define the faces of the forms super well! My yelp review is: 5 stars, delicious food, will eat at again 👌🏽✨

Thanks Halkyov!! So I think the main thing that I got from looking at his work, is that its very sculptural in the way that it’s form-focused but also, he does this thing where there’s a lot of faceting for the forms instead of a “smoothness” (kind of like what I was showing in the breakdown for the Cypress rough paints). The main thing though, and probably my favourite thing about his stuff, is probably this... I guess you could call it a form of “hatching” that he incorporates into the final paintings. I’m not sure what the intent is to adding them, but for some reason I love the look 😂 So I did try to include a bit of that in this piece as well 👍

Very nice, very dramatic and dynamic background! And I like the bits with the vest! Just curious, where did you draw from Leyendecker? I have my suspicions, but I'd like to hear it from the artist himself.
