Added 2021-01-04 21:04:10 +0000 UTC3rd creatuanary - I did one quicker painting in the evening yesterday and didn't like it, so I did some studies and sketching and made another painting today. I decided to include the 1st painting as well, just as a comparison and a reminder (to myself as well) what kind of difference some preparation can make.
In my case, good ideas usually come from doing some quick studies - different references give you different associations and sparks, and then, within a couple drawings, the fragments usually fit into some half decent concept. This way, you're getting some drawing mileage and practice, while also thinking about how you could use your reference for the illustration you're planning, which is like killing 2 flies with one swing, instead of sitting on your hands and trying to come up with ideas.
A good way to take this further is to just do some thumbnail sketching based around the ideas that came to you while studying.
