Gold Statue Study

Here's a  material study in preparation for a series of characters that are gonna have golden armor. I'll be posting the process for coming up with ideas, thumbnailing, concepting and finishing up those characters as well.

Here are some notes on the study:

The big takeaways are:

1. Gold has all kindz of hues you wouldn't expect, particularly some blues (which are more like desaturated yellow/greens) in this case. If there's no sky reflected, there are often greens.

2. When I have to invent the material, the main thing to think about will be that little sphere up there, because it tells me which color/value different facing planes are - that way there will be consistency.

3. For the sake of the 3D effect, It would make most sense to have the down-facing planes darker, even though there are cases like this froggy, where light objects are reflected in the bottom planes

4. If trying to fit an object into an environment, it's enough to reflect the colors of the environment onto the object to have it fit in that space. Since my characters are going to have dark backgrounds, I'll be thinking about reflecting darker values onto planes more perpendicular to the camera.

And lastly all this is to say: always try to think about what you're going to apply the study to.
