I think ive heard of the term but never looked into it but yeah from my experience thats the best way to progress really quickly, you cant just do reference studies or invention alone, but do ref + invention in a chronological order

It's essentially a name for the workflow you describe for going from reference to invention - Actively recalling something you've studied , but without aid to better cement it in your memory. It's also the same thing you do when you teach somebody else I try to structure my entire practice around this concept these days
