The Weapon Master Shall Never Die Bare-Handed in Genshin Impact [148]

“Evil spirits?”

Jia Changjiang stared at the blue-haired exorcist, momentarily taken aback.

Noticing Jia Changjiang’s confusion, the young exorcist realized his approach might have been abrupt. He quickly released Jia Changjiang’s arm and offered a polite bow.

“My apologies. I sensed a lingering aura of malevolence around you, so I stopped you without thinking,” he explained.

“My name is Chongyun. My family has resided in Liyue for generations, specializing in exorcism and demon-slaying. The aura I detected suggests you may have come into contact with something unnatural recently.”

Chongyun’s gaze remained steady as he asked, “Have you encountered anything strange or out of the ordinary?”

“Something strange?” Jia Changjiang scratched his chin, pretending to think. “Well, someone I know has been acting increasingly unreliable lately. Does that count as strange?”

He muttered this flippantly, sizing up Chongyun. The young man seemed oddly familiar to him. “Hmm… you look like… ice greatsword?”

“Ice greatsword?” Chongyun echoed, frowning slightly. “I do wield a claymore, and my Vision is of the Cryo element… Do we know each other?”

Chongyun genuinely began racking his brain, trying to recall if he had met Jia Changjiang before.

“No, just heard about you,” Jia Changjiang said casually. “But you’re an exorcist?”

He narrowed his eyes at Chongyun, his curiosity piqued. While Jia Changjiang hadn’t paid much attention to character backstories, the mention of evil spirits caught his interest.

“What exactly do you mean by ‘evil spirits’?” Jia Changjiang asked.

Chongyun explained earnestly, “Sometimes, the spirits of the deceased are consumed by hatred or unwillingness to move on. They coalesce into malevolent entities we call evil spirits. Plagues, apparitions, and unnatural phenomena are all linked to these spirits.”

He continued, “The aura around you is faint and dissipating, but it’s unmistakable. For your safety, I’d like to track down and eradicate whatever caused it.”

“Evil spirits, huh…” Jia Changjiang mulled over the explanation. He had an inkling of where the aura might have come from, but he said, “I don’t think I’ve encountered anything unusual recently.”

Chongyun looked disappointed but didn’t press the issue. “If you ever face any trouble with evil spirits, please don’t hesitate to seek me out.”

As Chongyun turned to leave, Jia Changjiang called out, “Wait. Chongyun, I’m intrigued by what you said about evil spirits.”

With a grin, he gestured toward a nearby bench. “Why don’t we sit and talk for a bit? I’m Jia Changjiang Changjiang, a weapon master. I’ve recently arrived in Liyue and am traveling with companions in search of worthy opponents.”

He leaned forward slightly, his tone turning playful. “So, tell me… are these evil spirits strong?”

Chongyun hesitated, sensing something fiery in Jia Changjiang’s gaze. Before he could respond, Jia Changjiang’s hand landed firmly on his shoulder.

“And one more thing,” Jia Changjiang asked with a wolfish grin, “as an exorcist… how strong are you?”

About thirty minutes later, Jia Changjiang and Chongyun were sitting by the docks, sharing stories. Jia Changjiang explained some of his background, while Chongyun gave a more detailed account of his work as an exorcist.

Despite his stoic demeanor, Chongyun revealed a surprising amount about himself, even venting some personal frustrations.

Though he had fought countless battles against evil, his pure-yang constitution made it impossible for him to actually see or be harmed by spirits. Even ordinary heat could overwhelm him, leading to more mundane struggles in his daily life.

Chongyun also shared stories about the adepti, mystical beings rumored to protect Liyue, and mentioned the Vigilant Yaksha, a legendary demon-slaying adeptus tasked with vanquishing malevolence.

Jia Changjiang couldn’t help but chuckle at how forthcoming Chongyun was. For someone who gave off such a serious and distant first impression, the boy was surprisingly easy to talk to—and easy to mislead.

If trustworthiness could be measured in how much someone would help count the cash after being conned, Jia Changjiang thought, this kid would probably count five whole stacks.

Chongyun also mentioned his close friend Xingqiu, whom he described as clever and resourceful. Apparently, it was Xingqiu who often helped Chongyun navigate situations he couldn’t handle alone. Today, however, Xingqiu was busy searching for books, leaving Chongyun to investigate rumors of evil spirits alone—which led to his encounter with Jia Changjiang.

“I didn’t expect you to be the Honorary Knight who helped Mondstadt during the dragon crisis,” Chongyun said thoughtfully. “Perhaps the aura I detected came from that incident?”

“Mondstadt’s dragon crisis was widely discussed, even here in Liyue. If you and your companions could resolve something so catastrophic, ordinary evil spirits wouldn’t pose a threat to you.”

“Probably not,” Jia Changjiang replied with a casual laugh, though internally, he had a pretty good idea of where the aura had come from.

During Mondstadt’s dragon crisis, Jia Changjiang had encountered abyssal mages who used a form of resentment to empower a Frostarm Lawachurl. The energy had mysteriously dissipated into Jia Changjiang during the battle.

The phrase “No Evil Can Prevail” from his incomplete system achievement came to mind.

So, this unfinished achievement is related to the lingering resentment of those spirits? Jia Changjiang wondered.

If that was the case, could interacting with the adepti, hunting down evil spirits, or even meeting the Vigilant Yaksha help him complete it?

Jia Changjiang didn’t know what rewards awaited him for finishing the achievement, but the incomplete progress bar hanging over him was like an unresolved notification on a phone—annoying enough to drive him mad.

“Are you here to witness the Rite of Descension, Mr. Jia?” Chongyun asked, his tone warm and curious.

“The Rite is one of the most important events in Liyue’s calendar. Although I tend to avoid crowded gatherings, it’s said that wherever Rex Lapis manifests, even the foulest spirits dare not linger.”
