“That’s fine. Lumine, your turn!”
Jax stepped aside, gesturing dramatically to Lumine and Paimon.
Paimon laughed nervously, rubbing the back of her head. “Well, about that... maybe we can discuss the price a little?”
After some spirited negotiation—and thanks to Xiangling’s good name—Chef Mao relented and offered a more reasonable price. A short while later, the group received their food, freshly prepared and neatly packed.
“Teucer, look!” Lumine said as she held up the food boxes, then made a show of stashing them away in her inventory. “Magic!”
“Whoa! That’s amazing!” Teucer exclaimed, his eyes wide with excitement. “So, Uncle, Big Sis, are we going to see One-Eyed Little Treasure now?”
“Well, we might not encounter one, but we can hope,” Jax said with a chuckle. “But remember, the ruins can be dangerous, so you have to stay close and not wander off.”
“Got it!” Teucer promised, nodding eagerly.
“Let’s head to Cuijue Slope,” Lumine suggested. “I recently found a massive door there. It’s incredibly sturdy, and I haven’t figured out how to open it yet.”
“And there are a bunch of pillars scattered around,” she continued. “I even asked Zhongli if he had any advice. He gave me nine stones and said they’d help open the door... but he wasn’t very clear about how to use them.”
Lumine pulled a few yellow stones from her bag and handed them to Jax. “He called them ‘Remembrance Stones.’ They feel... odd, almost like they’re holding ancient memories. Jax, take a look.”
Jax examined the stones, turning them over in his hands. Just as Lumine had said, they emanated a strange sensation, like a flood of fragmented memories from long-forgotten wars.
“This feels familiar...” Jax muttered, raising an eyebrow.
He vaguely recalled the legend behind these stones—part of the Nine Pillars of Peace task. In the world of Teyvat, these stones were often rewards for collecting Geoculi and offering them to the Statues of the Seven. But here, it seemed Zhongli himself had provided them.
“So, do you know how to use them?” Lumine asked, surprised.
“Yeah... I think so,” Jax replied. “Each of these stones matches one of the nine pillars. Insert the stones into the pillars, and the door should open.”
“Then what are we waiting for?”
Lumine’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Let’s go treasure hunting!”
“Treasure hunting!” Paimon cheered.
Teucer hesitated before joining in enthusiastically. “Treasure... hunting?”
“Alright, treasure hunting it is!” Jax carefully pocketed the Remembrance Stones. “Cuijue Slope, here we come!”
“Let’s move out!”
Following the trail through Guili Plains and crossing Luhua Pool by boat, the group eventually reached Cuijue Slope.
The atmosphere shifted as they arrived. The previously bright and sunny skies darkened abruptly, casting a heavy, oppressive mood over the area.
Teucer instinctively grabbed Lumine’s hand, sticking close as they made their way forward. Jax led the group, shield and spear in hand, ready to face any threats.
“This is it,” Lumine said, pointing toward the nine towering stone pillars scattered across the landscape. “But some of the pillars are broken... do you think the mechanisms will still work?”
“Of course they’ll work. Zhongli gave us these stones, and he wouldn’t hand over something useless,” Jax replied confidently, guiding the group toward the nearest pillar. “Lumine, you handle placing the stones. I’ll stay down here and keep an eye on Teucer.”
“Got it.”
Lumine nodded and began climbing the pillar. Meanwhile, Jax positioned himself defensively, holding his shield steady as he turned to Teucer. “Alright, kid, are you scared?”
“N-no! Teucer’s really brave!” the boy said, puffing out his chest.
“Good.” Jax ruffled Teucer’s hair. “This place might seem scary, but exploring ruins can be a lot of fun. Just stick with us, okay?”
“Okay! I’ll be brave for One-Eyed Little Treasure!”
“That’s the spirit.” Jax glanced up. “Lumine should be almost done by now...”
Before he could finish, a loud crack shattered the silence. The stone pillar Lumine was working on suddenly split, fragments of rock flying everywhere. Caught off guard, Lumine lost her grip and tumbled to the ground.
Fortunately, Jax had already anticipated this. With his shield raised, he blocked the debris, protecting both Teucer and Paimon.
“Jax, you set me up!” Lumine groaned, rubbing her sore backside as she got to her feet. She unsheathed her sword, glaring daggers at him. “Were you expecting that to happen?”
“Hey, I didn’t set you up!” Jax protested, though his grin suggested otherwise. “How was I supposed to know the pillar would explode? I just happened to raise my shield at the right time...”
“You totally knew!” Lumine shot back, pointing her sword at him. “Why else would you have your shield ready?”
Jax leaned back, placing a hand on her forehead to keep her at arm’s length. “Relax. Someone had to stay down here to protect Teucer, and between the two of us, I’m the one with the shield. It only makes sense.”
Lumine growled in frustration. “I can protect people too! I’ve been training with Zhongli and Noelle, remember? Besides, I can’t dodge explosions while climbing!”
Their argument paused as they both glanced toward Paimon, who was hovering nearby, munching on a snack and enjoying the show.
“What?” Paimon asked, looking between them. “Why are you staring at me?”
Jax and Lumine exchanged a mischievous glance.
“Paimon, my dear,” Lumine said sweetly, walking toward her. “Do you like fancy dinners?”
“Of course! Paimon loves fancy dinners!”
“Well then, that makes things simple,” Lumine said, sharing a wicked smile with Jax.
At that moment, Paimon realized she was in trouble. The matching grins on Jax and Lumine’s faces were eerily identical, radiating an unsettling sense of shared mischief...
