This Is My Holy Grail War [122]

The dense fog swallowed Saber’s surroundings, obscuring Mordred’s figure completely. Even the faint sounds of her opponent’s movements seemed to fade away into silence.

The mist hindered Saber’s movements, slowing her down significantly. As an Assassin-class Servant, her Agility had once been ranked at A+, but now, as a Saber-class, it no longer had that enhancement. The fog had further reduced it by an entire rank, leaving her feeling uncharacteristically sluggish. However, her most relied-upon skill remained intact, and with that, Saber felt no fear.

Even though she couldn’t see anything, the solid ground beneath her feet gave her a sense of stability.

Archer, I’ve lost contact with the enemy Saber.

Understood. That entire area is blanketed by fog. It’s not just your sight—even sound can’t penetrate it, Archer replied. Their magical communication was unaffected, the fog incapable of severing the bond forged through mana.

I’ve identified the enemy Saber’s true identity: the traitorous knight of the Round Table, Mordred, Saber informed him. She’s a formidable opponent. I seem to be at a disadvantage against her.

A disadvantage in compatibility? Got it. I’ll try to stall the enemy Saber. Your priority is to deal with Assassin, Archer responded quickly. Can you provide any specifics about her?

She has powerful [Mana Burst] abilities—ranked at A, Saber said while scanning the fog for threats. Her fighting style feels more like a Berserker’s. She’s a strong close-combat fighter, so I wouldn’t recommend engaging her head-on.

Understood. I’ll hold her off.

That brief exchange was all the information Saber could provide before the fog demanded her attention. She needed to find a way out but wasn’t in a rush. The mist posed no direct harm, and maintaining it would undoubtedly drain her opponent’s mana. If this turned into a battle of attrition, Saber would eventually gain the upper hand.

“Are you a woman?”

A childlike voice suddenly echoed through the mist, startling Saber. She glanced around, but the speaker was nowhere to be seen.

“A bounded field?” Saber muttered, recognizing the structure’s magical composition. As an adept mage, she quickly assessed its strength. This bounded field wasn’t particularly powerful; it might threaten ordinary humans, but even a novice mage could endure it for some time.

“If you don’t answer me, I’ll start playing early,” the voice continued. “Was the person with you earlier a woman too?”

The fog cloaked Saber’s vision entirely, and the disembodied voice bounced around, making it impossible to pinpoint its origin.

“Still no answer? Fine, I’ll just find her later,” the voice added cheerfully.

Suddenly, Saber’s instincts screamed a warning. Twin daggers sliced through the fog, hurtling toward her.

The mist was so dense it reduced visibility to less than a meter, even for a Servant. Its oppressive thickness blocked out almost all light, leaving most Servants vulnerable to an ambush. But Saber’s [Instinct] nullified this disadvantage entirely.

Left!

Clang! Clang!

Sparks flew as Saber’s blade intercepted the daggers, deflecting both with precision.

“Wow, how did you see where they were coming from?” a curious voice asked, once again echoing from the mist. But this time, Saber could trace the attack’s trajectory and identify her assailant’s location.

Turning sharply, Saber laid eyes on her elusive opponent for the first time.

Jack the Ripper.

The name conjured images of a monstrous serial killer, but the figure before her was a small girl, seemingly innocent and no older than a child. It was difficult to reconcile her youthful appearance and wide-eyed naivety with the notorious murderer.

Despite her lack of apparent malice—or even bloodlust—the girl’s attacks were undeniably lethal, aimed at Saber’s life with unrelenting ferocity.

“Your soul looks... delicious,” the girl murmured, her innocent expression twisting into something far darker. “I want to fill my stomach tonight.” With that, she vanished into the mist once more.

The fog thickened, smothering Saber’s surroundings in an even more oppressive haze. Jack’s voice echoed erratically, impossible to locate. But then Saber’s [Instincts] sent another jolt through her.

Behind!

Saber spun and slashed her blade without hesitation.

“Ah, that hurts!”

The sensation of her sword striking flesh confirmed a hit. The metallic tang of blood filled the mist, signaling that her counterattack had wounded her elusive opponent.

Though Jack didn’t reappear, the lingering scent of blood betrayed her location. Saber honed in on the smell, tracking her through the fog.

“You really hurt me. How mean,” Jack’s voice came from the mist, low and teasing. “But I like you. Pure women are my favorite.” The giggle that followed sent a chill down Saber’s spine.

Though Jack’s tone was hard to read, Saber recognized her for what she was—a madwoman. This Assassin behaved as erratically as a Berserker. In fact, it seemed like none of the true Berserkers in this Holy Grail War displayed such madness. It was ironic.

The battle’s dynamic had shifted. Jack’s initial advantage was eroding, and Saber had found a way to counter her through the blood scent. But then, from within the mist, she heard a faint, ominous chant.

“From here begins Hell…”

The words were barely audible, but Saber immediately recognized it as the prelude to a Noble Phantasm’s activation. Her instincts screamed at her to prepare. Without hesitation, she unleashed her [Mana Burst], enveloping herself in a brilliant blue aura. Every nerve in her body was alert.

Suddenly, the mist flared with an unnatural crimson light. Jack emerged from the haze, daggers in hand, her voice rising to a crescendo.

“[Maria the Ripper]!”

With a feral cry, she charged at Saber, her weapons gleaming with deadly intent.
