Xiangling and Guoba—a girl and a bear—arrived bearing dishes, Xiangling holding a plate while Guoba balanced a serving tray on his head. They set the new dish down on the table in front of everyone.
“Deep-fried…”
Chongyun’s expression turned hesitant at the sight of the steaming fried veggie balls.
“Slime condensate…” Jia Changjiang stared at the dish, lost in thought.
“Assorted veggies…” Xingqiu’s gaze lingered on the visible bits of diced carrots peeking out from the balls, his reluctance plain.
Without hesitation, Lumine grabbed the topmost ball with her chopsticks and popped it into her mouth.
“Whew-whew!”
The steaming hot bite forced her to blow on it, chewing quickly before finally swallowing.
Paimon, meanwhile, had been handed a child-sized spoon by Xiangling and was eagerly sampling the dish.
“Mmm… It’s delicious!” Paimon’s eyes sparkled as she stuffed another ball into her mouth. “Xiangling’s slime dishes just keep getting better!”
“Yum! Mmph, mmph, mmph!” Lumine’s cheeks puffed out like a hamster as she chewed enthusiastically. She gave Xiangling a thumbs-up while her mouth was still full. “Mmph mmph! Sho good!”
“Swallow before you speak,” Jia Changjiang said, giving Lumine a light knock on the head.
Lumine finally managed to gulp down her food. “Jax, you should try some too! Xiangling’s cooking just keeps improving… Wait, why aren’t you guys eating?”
Impatient with her chopsticks, Lumine resorted to grabbing the veggie balls with her hands, popping them into her mouth as if she hadn’t eaten in days.
While Lumine was busy devouring the food, with Xiangling eagerly trailing after her for feedback, Jia Changjiang, Chongyun, and Xingqiu sat quietly, staring at the plate of deep-fried Slime Condensate Assorted Veggie Balls as if facing a monumental challenge.
For Chongyun, it was his constitution—foods with too much heat were strictly off-limits. Xingqiu, on the other hand, simply couldn’t stand carrots.
As for Jia Changjiang, he was pondering the fact that he had never tried a dish made with slime as an ingredient since arriving in this world.
“Come to think of it, the first enemies I ever fought here were slimes,” Jia Changjiang remarked, picking up one of the balls.
He thought back to his early days in this world when he had first encountered Pyro Slimes.
The slime condensate gave the veggie ball a slight springiness as he tossed it into his mouth. Surprisingly, despite the unusual ingredient, the taste was quite good. The texture was unexpectedly soft and sticky in a pleasant way.
“Your first enemies were slimes?” Chongyun, still avoiding the dish, was nonetheless intrigued by Jia Changjiang’s story.
After all, Jia Changjiang was known for defeating an ancient Archon. Chongyun couldn’t help but wonder if he could learn something valuable from him.
“Yeah, my first encounter in the wild was with slimes. I was so startled that I ended up getting chased by a bunch of Pyro Slimes for over half an hour.”
Propping his chin on one hand, Jia Changjiang chuckled at the memory. “Looking back, it’s kind of funny now.”
“Slimes… don’t exactly sound like the kind of monsters a hero would take on,” Xingqiu remarked, clearly amused.
“A warrior who can defeat an Archon, but once ran from slimes for half an hour—that’s certainly a tale you don’t hear every day,” Xingqiu added, recalling the martial arts stories he’d read.
“Yeah, they caught me off guard the first time I saw them,” Jia Changjiang said, popping another veggie ball into his mouth. Chongyun pressed him for more details.
“And then? What did you do next?” Chongyun asked eagerly.
“What next?” Jia Changjiang grinned. “I pulled up a tree, used it as a weapon, and smashed those slimes into pieces.”
“Huh?”
Both Chongyun and Xingqiu were left speechless at his response. Lumine, however, wasn’t fazed—Jia Changjiang, like her, was a traveler from another world. Running from slimes at first wasn’t exactly shocking to her.
Soon enough, the plate of fried veggie balls had been mostly devoured by Jia Changjiang, Lumine, and Paimon.
“So? What do you think? I used a lot of new ingredients this time. Did it have that zing I was aiming for?” Xiangling asked excitedly.
“The outside’s crispy, the inside’s savory and flavorful—it’s perfect! I think this dish is definitely a winner!” Lumine said, wiping her greasy mouth and giving Xiangling another thumbs-up.
“Really? Then I’ll try refining it and maybe add it to the menu!” Xiangling said, jotting down some notes.
Now brimming with confidence from their feedback, Xiangling turned to the group with a cheerful offer. “Since you haven’t eaten yet, let me make you something! There aren’t many customers right now, so I can whip up whatever you’d like!”
At her words, the group’s eyes lit up.
Despite her experiments with bizarre dishes, Xiangling’s cooking skills were undeniably top-notch.
“Osmanthus cake and crystal shrimp, please. Oh, and no carrots,” Xingqiu said.
“Hmm… Cold noodles would be nice. Adding some fresh shrimp would make it even better,” Chongyun suggested.
“Spicy Jueyun Chicken, squirrel fish, and lotus seafood soup! Paimon wants all of those!”
“I’ll eat anything Xiangling makes! Oh, and bring another plate of those veggie balls!” Lumine chimed in.
Amid the clamor of different requests, Xiangling quickly sorted through the orders and turned to Jia Changjiang.
“For me? Just a bowl of noodles. Two fried eggs on top, a spoonful of lard, and a sprinkle of scallions. That’s all,” Jia Changjiang said simply.
“Scallion lard noodles… Got it! I’ll start right away!” Xiangling said, dashing off to the kitchen. Meanwhile, the group at the table began to chat.
They talked about everything from local rumors to sightings of monsters and their recent adventures.
Eventually, the conversation shifted to the Guhua Clan.
“I heard the Guhua Clan was once famous in Liyue for both spear and sword techniques,” Jia Changjiang said, turning to Xingqiu. “You’re pretty skilled, aren’t you?”
