Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [228]

Cynthia looked at August with a gaze full of curiosity.

“Is there something odd about me, Miss Cynthia?” August asked.

“I’m just very grateful for the intel you provided,” Cynthia replied earnestly.

Thanks to the information August had submitted earlier, the Sinnoh League had been able to stop Team Galactic’s attempt to capture the lake guardians in time.

Realizing what she was referring to, August gave a modest wave of his hand. “I only did a small part. It wasn’t anything worth mentioning.”

Honestly, that whole affair had been nothing to brag about—those poachers had practically delivered the intel themselves.

“Did they manage to catch Hunter J? She did threaten me last time,” August asked.

Not that August was one to hold grudges, but he still clearly remembered Hunter J’s threat back then. It had left an impression.

Cynthia looked a little embarrassed. “She got away.”

She seemed a bit apologetic. Although they had foiled Team Galactic’s scheme, the actual results hadn’t been anything to celebrate. Aside from a few low-level grunts, the main operatives had all escaped—and Hunter J, who had been working with them, was the first to flee.

Noticing the awkward atmosphere, Sabrina cut in. “Why don’t we head to the hotel?”

The tension eased.

“You’re right, I forgot myself,” August said. “Miss Cynthia, please follow me. The League has already arranged accommodations for you.”

“Thank you, I appreciate it,” Cynthia replied graciously.

...

Hotel Café

After escorting Cynthia to her room, August and Sabrina sat down together in the café downstairs.

“So?” Sabrina asked, her tone unreadable. “You think Cynthia’s pretty?”

August ruffled the fluffy fur around Eevee’s neck, ignoring its offended look. “Why are you asking that?”

“Because I’m keeping an eye on you for Blue!” Sabrina said, completely serious.

“Oh?” August looked at her, half amused. “Just for Blue?”

Sabrina faltered slightly under his gaze but forced herself to remain composed. “Of course. She and I are close—like sisters.”

She didn’t get to finish.

“I’ll take your word for it,” August cut in.

Sabrina wasn’t sure why, but the way he said it made her feel... uneasy.

Did he figure something out...?

When Cynthia came down after unpacking and changing, she saw August fiddling with Eevee at the table, while Sabrina sat beside him, staring off into space like her mind was elsewhere.

Cynthia was curious about what had happened but didn’t ask—after all, they weren’t that familiar yet.

Noticing her arrival, August stood and greeted her. “Miss Cynthia. I’m in charge of security for this year’s Indigo Conference. After the hijacking incident, I’d like to get a clearer picture of Team Galactic.”

That was a reasonable request. Cynthia nodded and gave a brief overview of Team Galactic’s structure in the Sinnoh region.

She explained about their leader, Cyrus, and his high-ranking subordinates: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto.

“My belief is this,” Cynthia continued, “I came to Kanto representing the Sinnoh League to establish cooperation between our two regions. It seems Team Galactic caught wind of this and wants to sabotage it.”

Their last plan had already been foiled by the Sinnoh League. Now, with Cynthia reaching out to Kanto, if the partnership succeeded, Galactic’s future would be much harder. Their motive was clear.

“I’ve read that the original Team Galactic was once a pioneering group in ancient Sinnoh. Hard to believe what they’ve turned into,” August said with a sigh.

He was thinking of the ancient Galaxy Expedition Team from Hisui—a group whose intentions had been purely exploratory.

Time was a terrifying force. That expedition team had, over generations, morphed into a criminal organization hell-bent on controlling Dialga and Palkia to destroy the world and create a new one.

Cynthia raised an eyebrow. “You know Sinnoh’s history?”

Even within Sinnoh, most people only knew Galactic as “criminals” or “madmen.” Very few were aware that the group had roots stretching back to antiquity.

Only in the League’s library could one find scattered records of that origin.

“I’ve done a bit of research,” August replied.

Not only from what he’d known before coming to this world, but also from the extensive documents he’d accessed after acquiring the Plates and scouring the International Police’s database.

If Arceus ever came knocking, he didn’t want to be caught completely unprepared.

The conversation had started to drift, so August brought it back. “Now that I’ve got what I need, don’t worry, Miss Cynthia. This is Kanto. Team Galactic won’t be able to stir up any real trouble here.”

Maybe if Cyrus had already obtained the [Red Chain] and was controlling Dialga and Palkia, August would be a bit more cautious. But this version of Cyrus?

August figured he could handle ten of him at once.

Cynthia looked at him with amusement. “One more thing.”

She reached over and picked up a temperature-controlled container.

Inside, nestled gently, was a red-and-blue-patterned Pokémon egg.

“Bui?” Eevee perked up and curiously sniffed the container.

This egg looked different from Gold’s Togepi egg, though Eevee couldn’t quite say how.

“Lance mentioned you were hoping to raise a Togepi,” Cynthia said. “My Togekiss and a Togetic recently had an egg...”

She pushed the box across the table.

“I’ve been looking for a suitable trainer to raise it.”

August didn’t take the offer too seriously. As Sinnoh’s Champion, Cynthia’s Pokémon eggs were probably in high demand—she could have handed it to anyone.

Still, he placed his hand gently on the egg.

It was warm from the container. Releasing a little of his aura, he could feel the strong, lively energy of the Togepi within.

“It’s about to hatch,” he said.

Cynthia blinked, surprised.

Without another word, August took out a GS Ball and summoned Celebi.

Celebi emerged, clearly mid-nap, blinking in confusion.

“Could you give it a little blessing?” August gestured at the egg.

“Bi~!” Celebi looked thoroughly annoyed. Seriously? You woke me up for this? Do you see these dark circles under my eyes?

August: ...Excuse me?

Haven’t those dark circles always been there...?

After a short back-and-forth about whether or not it was sleep-deprived, Celebi finally gave up and turned to the egg.

It raised both hands and waved them gently. A green light fell over the egg.

The moment the green glow sank in, the egg began to stir.

Crack.

A fracture ran a third of the way down from the top.

Then—

“Ja bi ja bi boi~!”

With a spirited chirp, a Togepi burst through the shell, poking its head out.

Completely unfazed, the newborn looked around, ignored Eevee’s greeting, and flung itself straight into August’s chest.

Oof...

August winced. That... felt like [Take Down].

Holding the wriggling, affectionate Togepi in his arms, he sighed.

Well... it’s still just a baby.

Watching August wince as Togepi headbutted him in the ribs, both Sabrina and Cynthia couldn’t help but laugh.

Cynthia, still recovering from the surprise of seeing Celebi, was clearly pleased by how naturally Togepi clung to August.

If the little one liked him, then she could rest easy.

“I’m leaving it in your care,” Cynthia said warmly.

“Don’t worry. I’ve got it.” August lifted the Togepi and set it gently on the table.

Just then, a server walked over with three cups of ice cream.

Cynthia’s attention was immediately drawn.

“What’s this...?”

“Miltank milk ice cream,” August said. “I heard you were a fan—”

He didn’t even finish before Cynthia was staring at the trio of cups, completely torn.

“Which one should I try first...?”

Saffron City – Team Rocket Base

Sird stood in the office, her Banette hovering silently by her side.

“...Yes.”

“I understand. I’ll attempt to disrupt the cooperation efforts.”

After hanging up, she turned to the map of Kanto that Giovanni often studied. The usual smile on her face had vanished.

“What a pain...”

As a Galactic operative embedded in Team Rocket, Sird had never been activated before. Until now, she’d simply relayed intel to Galactic HQ at regular intervals.

After Team Rocket had suffered major losses, she’d assumed she would continue lying low. But out of nowhere, the order had come.

And the mission Cyrus gave her—

Sabotage the alliance between the Sinnoh and Kanto Leagues.

Emotionally, Sird could understand the logic. If the two regions successfully allied, it would be a disaster for Team Galactic.

But rationally, trying to interfere with the alliance? A total suicide mission.

For one thing, Cynthia herself had come to Kanto—no easy opponent. And then there was the man in charge of this year’s Indigo Conference security...

August. The one who ruined the Mewtwo Project, wounded Giovanni, orchestrated a scheme in Johto to pit wild beasts against one another, crushed the Masked Legion.

Going up against him meant confronting August head-on.

Standing alone in the office, staring at the wall map, Sird sank into thought.
