Elroe Great Labyrinth.
Kumoko gnawed absentmindedly on a freshly roasted earth dragon steak. Not far from her, Zhongli sat quietly atop a stone throne.
Zhongli had been sitting there for well over ten days now.
To be honest, this stretch of time had been the most comfortable days Kumoko had ever experienced in the Elroe Labyrinth.
Sure, she’d occasionally had to swat away something like another earth dragon trying to pick a fight, but for the most part, life was slow and blissfully uneventful.
No looming threat of death by monster attack—she was already one of the strongest monsters around. Plus, there was that magical greenstone table Zhongli had casually conjured, like something out of Doraemon, which provided her with an endless supply of food and drink from countless worlds.
Most importantly—no enemies scheming against her.
The Fairy Tribe chief was dead.
The queen spider who had ambushed her? Also dead.
The Primeval Beast Demon Lord? Now reconciled.
Even the pope of the Divine Word Faith, the strongest force in human society, was now a companion.
—Only thing is, who knows how long Zhongli-daiqianbei will stay like this.
Her eight spider eyes stared fixedly at Zhongli’s serene figure on the throne, while her human half peeled and nibbled at some fruit she’d brought back from outside the labyrinth.
Crunch, crunch…
The human palate seemed to appreciate the sweetness of fruit much more deeply. It made Kumoko downright giddy with each bite.
She never imagined that one day, right here in the Elroe Labyrinth, she’d be feasting on both fruit and dragon meat, humming tunes to herself out of sheer joy.
Thinking back to when she used to choke down the worst-tasting toxic frog meat, venomous snake meat, and hornet meat… wow, she’d really suffered back then.
Gurrrgle~!
The last bite of roasted earth dragon disappeared into her belly, and Kumoko patted her stomach and let out a happy burp.
She was just about to wander over to the greenstone table of endless sweets for dessert and tea, when something in her heart stirred.
She whipped her head up, eyes locking on Zhongli’s figure atop the throne.
Sure enough, the divine being who had wagered against the evil god D had opened his eyes.
A faint gleam flickered in those irises—light undulating within, yet devoid of any trace of human emotion. An impassive, godlike aura radiated from him and swept through the area.
Sovereign. Detached. Unfathomable.
In that instant, Kumoko felt herself completely overwhelmed by his gaze. Her thoughts faded. An instinct to kneel—no, to prostrate herself in worship—seized her entire being.
But the next moment, those eyes closed again.
And with that, the urge to worship quietly dissipated.
From atop the stone throne, Zhongli slowly rose and stretched. His calm gaze landed on the snowy-white spider girl before him, and he gave a faint nod.
“At last, some progress.”
With that, he descended from the throne and made his way to the greenstone table.
Two plates of pastries and a cup of tea materialized naturally upon the surface.
Zhongli took a sip of tea, sampled a bite of pastry.
Only then did Kumoko scuttle over and ask with curiosity, “Zhongli-daiqianbei, have you figured out how to win this war game?”
“I’d say I have about a fifty percent chance,” Zhongli said matter-of-factly, never one to exaggerate. “I’m confident in the special ability I’ve designed, but whether it holds up in an actual war… that remains to be seen.”
“Besides, my conditions for victory are stricter than D’s.”
“Stricter?” Kumoko echoed, puzzled.
“I intend to claim a complete victory over the evil god D,” Zhongli said plainly. “My goal isn’t just to defeat her. I want to do it without letting humanity or the demon race suffer heavy losses.”
“That’s impossible.” Kumoko couldn’t help but push back. “The win condition is literally one side’s total annihilation.”
“Even so, surrender is still a valid outcome in war,” Zhongli replied mildly, sipping his tea. “In many cases, when one side’s strength overwhelmingly surpasses the other, the weaker party surrenders rather than face extinction.”
“So you really think you can crush D completely?” Kumoko nodded thoughtfully.
“No,” Zhongli shook his head. “As I said, I’ve only got a fifty-fifty chance.”
As he spoke, Zhongli gently tapped the surface of the greenstone table. In an instant, a vivid 3D projection rose above it.
Kumoko leaned in and squinted, studying the image for a moment before asking, “Is this the border between the demon and human territories?”
“Yes.” Zhongli gave a slight nod. “Today is January 1st, New Year’s Day. According to the wager D and I made, the war game begins today. And its opening signal is... well, look. It’s begun.”
Kumoko followed his gaze toward the projection—and watched as layer after layer of inky blackness bloomed like abyssal smoke across the borderlands.
The darkness appeared out of nowhere, instantly engulfing the stretch between demon and human lands. In the next moment, it surged skyward, transforming into massive walls of black energy that reached from the ground to the heavens, slicing the world clean in two.
Just like that, the lands of humanity and demonkind were brutally split by divine power.
“It has begun,” Zhongli murmured softly.
Then he raised one hand and reached into the unseen void—pulling forth a glowing orb of strange light.
Kumoko watched with interest as the luminous sphere hovered between his fingers.
Seeing her curious expression, Zhongli explained naturally, “This is what I created over the past ten days—by reverse-engineering the entire skill system and reshaping its inner framework.”
“You already know why I came to this world, don’t you, Kumoko?”
“Hmm? I guess... you were interested in the skill system, right?” Kumoko thought for a moment before giving the obvious answer.
“Correct. And at this point, I’ve achieved most of my objective.” Zhongli’s eyes gleamed. “But if I just left now, I’d feel unsatisfied.”
“Mortal life is like dust and ash... and yet, there is still much worth preserving. To kill and exploit this world’s humans endlessly—for nothing more than personal amusement—even if one seeks redemption, that’s no excuse.”
Zhongli turned the teacup slowly in his hand.
“So let me end it. Let me sever the sorrowful chain between the god who once loved this world, and the greedy mortals who destroyed that love.”
“Kumoko, as the final act of our pact, allow me to give you a world of peace—free of war, quiet and whole.”
