Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [291]

As soon as Sabrina stepped into the room, she saw August bullying Eevee.

The poor Eevee had been tied into a ball and was dangling mid-air in August’s psychic grip, letting out helpless bui~ bui~ cries. Its little head wobbled from side to side, looking thoroughly toyed with.

She was long used to August’s occasional bouts of mischief.

Didn’t you see how Gardevoir, standing nearby, remained completely unbothered?

Still...

Sabrina's gaze shifted to the red chains wrapped around Eevee. Her psychic senses told her this wasn’t just any ordinary item.

Reaching over Gengar—who was munching on chips beside her—she took the remote and switched the TV from Haunting Night of the Dark Spirit to The Grand Marill Adventure.

Gengar had been watching with rapt attention as a hapless idiot was just about to get caught by the ghost spirit, when the screen suddenly jumped to a Marill being chased by a flock of Spearow...

Gengar immediately glared at the channel-switching culprit.

And then...

Gengar saw Sabrina’s half-smiling, half-threatening expression.

Having experienced Sabrina's psychic powers firsthand, Gengar couldn't help but shudder.

Sabrina pointed at the chips in its hand. Gengar, face scrunched up like it was on the verge of tears, reluctantly handed over the snack.

Then it sulkily slunk into August’s shadow.

August, watching the whole thing, was speechless. “Seriously, you’re way too bored. There’s a whole cabinet full of snacks, but you just had to steal Gengar’s?”

He reached down and patted the Gengar who was half-buried in his shadow, the other half clinging pathetically to his leg.

Sabrina replied nonchalantly, “Stolen chips taste better.”

Crunch.

She bit down on a chip, the crisp sound ringing clear.

“You know what... you might actually have a point,” August said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully.

Gengar, still hoping August might avenge it: “.....”

Even August wasn’t helping. How could it possibly stand up to Sabrina on its own?

Looking at Sabrina’s victorious smirk, Gengar puffed out its cheeks in frustration and burrowed deeper into August’s shadow.

Just then, August’s phone chimed.

He plopped the dizzy, swaying Eevee down on the table and reached for the phone. “Who’d be messaging me at this hour…?”

Could it be that Giovanni finally came around and decided to stop blocking him?

He opened the message. It was from headquarters.

August’s expression shifted subtly.

Sabrina immediately caught the change. “What is it?”

“Nothing,” August said after a deep breath. “Just... more trouble.”

He handed the phone to her.

Sabrina glanced at it. The message was brief:

[Team Galactic has taken control of the Nightmare Pokémon Darkrai and launched an attack on the International Police's Sinnoh Division. The division has been overrun... Only Looker escaped.]

Sabrina was stunned. Another regional division of the International Police just got wiped out...

August, for his part, now understood how Sird had managed to slip away from Giovanni.

Darkrai—the Nightmare Pokémon—had clearly blindsided Giovanni, catching him completely off guard.

Honestly? Giovanni didn’t go down without reason.

But the fact that Darkrai was now in Team Galactic’s hands... that was what truly worried August.

...

To be honest, if he had a choice, August would really rather not set foot in the Sinnoh region.

He’d even be willing to deal with another Groudon–Kyogre crisis over that.

But the Sinnoh region—especially with its murky ties to Arceus—was another story entirely. Until he figured out where the Divine Alpaca stood on him being a “Plate-hunting moocher,” he’d rather stay away.

But now... he might not have a choice.

“Headquarters didn’t exactly order us to take action, did they...?” Gary asked, seated at the conference table after reading the message.

It was true. HQ had only sent a message—not a direct assignment.

No mission meant no obligation. Right?

Sinnoh had Champion Cynthia, the Elite Four, and even Lorelei and Koga en route to assist. That should’ve been enough.

The rest of the group had differing opinions.

Zinnia, who’d just started building rapport with Lord Rayquaza, nodded fervently in agreement. Blue expressed cautious approval. But Sabrina and Courtney disagreed outright.

Blowing a bubble, Courtney, a former Team Magma member, said, “I don’t know much about Team Galactic... but from experience, these kinds of organizations can’t be judged by simple power comparisons.”

“In terms of strength, neither Archie nor Maxie was a match for Steven, yet they still managed to awaken Groudon and Kyogre. We can’t place all our hopes on the Sinnoh League.”

Sabrina, formerly of Team Rocket, nodded. “You need professionals to deal with evil organizations.”

And who were the professionals?

That was obvious.

No one had taken down more villainous groups—Team Rocket, the Masked Corps, Team Magma, and Team Aqua—than they had.

Still, the final decision rested with August.

Everyone turned to him.

After all, in the Kanto Division, August was the one in charge.

He paused in thought. “Technically, HQ didn’t assign us anything. Probably because we just finished dealing with the Hoenn crisis…”

“But as members of the International Police, we can’t ignore this provocation from Team Galactic just because we haven’t been given an order.”

“Besides, I promised Cynthia that if I had time, I’d lend a hand.”

“So…”

Everyone waited.

August finally said, “Start digging through the database. Contact Sinnoh’s side. Compile all intel on Team Galactic. Be prepared—if the situation worsens, we’ll deploy.”

The others nodded in agreement.

---

While August’s team was hashing out their plan, Giovanni also received the report.

Sinnoh. Team Galactic. Darkrai...

The combination of those keywords brought back the moment Sird had slipped through his fingers.

A moment of humiliation.

But when Giovanni saw the phrase “International Police Sinnoh Division destroyed,” he suddenly felt... a bit better.

It’s always painful to take a loss—but somehow, knowing your opponent suffered too made it easier to stomach.

He pulled out his phone and removed August from his block list, sending him the intel as a “response” to the two previous messages August had sent.

Partly to clarify that he had been defeated by Darkrai, not Sird.

And partly to say: You International Police aren’t looking so hot either.

After sending it, Giovanni chuckled coldly, imagining the look on August’s face.

But the smirk didn’t last long.

Ding.

A message popped up.

[August]: So you got smacked down by your own subordinate, huh?

Giovanni’s face froze.

Then another message followed.

[August]: Say, Sird’s been under your command all this time, and you never realized she had Darkrai?

[August]: If she had Darkrai, maybe Mewtwo wouldn’t have been so easy for me to snatch from you, huh.

[August]: Tsk, what a shame.

Bang!

Giovanni’s fist slammed into his desk.

The Rocket grunts standing guard outside heard the familiar thud and exchanged glances, each seeing the same “here we go again” look in the other’s eyes.

---

August looked at his phone, a little surprised he hadn’t been blocked again.

Maybe Giovanni’s tolerance for his jabs had improved?

Truly worthy of a criminal mastermind—the sheer emotional control is impressive, August thought.

He was even considering sending another message, asking how the Deoxys project was coming along—maybe it was time to take that off Giovanni’s hands—when his phone rang.

It was Steven.

“Steven?”

August was surprised.

Had something happened in Hoenn?

He picked up. Steven’s voice came through: “August, did you get the news from Sinnoh?”

“Yeah... you too? Don’t tell me the League wants you to head over there…”

Hoenn was still recovering. It’d be insane to send Steven now.

Steven quickly clarified, “No, nothing to do with the League. I’m calling on behalf of someone else…”

“Oh?”

August raised a brow. Who could get Steven to make a personal request?

“You remember how the Rayquaza capture project involved Devon Corp, Grand Meteor Town, and the Berlitz family, right?” Steven asked.

August glanced out the window, where Zinnia and Yellow were giving Rayquaza a massage out on the lawn. He frowned. “You’re saying…”

“Yes. The request came from the Berlitz family,” Steven confirmed.

The Berlitz family—Sinnoh’s wealthiest household. Over two centuries of history, with influence and assets across the region.

August hadn’t even contacted them yet—and they had already reached out to him.

“They probably know I’ve already bonded with Rayquaza, right?” August asked.

He hadn’t pursued those involved in the original capture operation, given his status as an International Police agent—and his friendship with Steven.

Still, it was unexpected that the Berlitz family would come to him voluntarily.

“What do they want?” August asked.

Steven explained, “During the Team Galactic attack on the International Police division in Sinnoh, their heiress—Platinum Berlitz—was caught in the vicinity.”

“She was affected by Darkrai’s nightmare energy. She’s been unconscious ever since. The family has tried everything, but nothing’s worked.”

“They heard about your abilities and are hoping you’ll help wake her.”

August raised an eyebrow.

Platinum Berlitz—one of the protagonists from the Special manga’s Diamond & Pearl arc.

And now she’d been dragged into Team Galactic’s attack. What terrible luck.

As for why the Berlitz family thought he could help?

August remembered the incident at Mossdeep Space Center where he’d used Celebi.

Probably because of that, he thought.

While August pondered, Steven waited silently.

Truthfully, Steven wouldn’t have gotten involved if the Berlitz weren’t Devon’s strategic partners. He would’ve just told them to go through official League channels.

But this... couldn’t be helped.

A long silence.

Steven was about to assume August would refuse when—

“Have them contact me,” August said at last.

The past between the Berlitz family and Rayquaza had nothing to do with a girl who was just a child at the time.

Besides… August glanced at the red chain in his hand.

Maybe this is the perfect excuse to get into Sinnoh.

As for the Rayquaza business... that could wait.

He rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

Gary happened to walk by just then, and the sight of August deep in thought made him shiver.

“Someone’s about to get unlucky,” he thought to himself.

...

The Berlitz family worked fast.

Just over ten minutes after August hung up with Steven, a call came in.

“Mr. August.”

A man appeared on the video call, dressed like a researcher, glasses perched on his nose, his face drawn and anxious.

“Dr. Berlitz,” August said.

He recognized him. In addition to being a member of the Berlitz family, he was also the assistant to Professor Rowan and currently the youngest Pokémon researcher in Sinnoh.

“Let’s skip the pleasantries. I heard the general situation from Steven. I need the full diagnostic data,” August said.

“Here it is.” Dr. Berlitz swiftly sent over the examination files.

August nodded at Blue, who immediately began projecting the data onto the screen.

His eyes scanned the details.

After a moment, August said, “There’s no immediate danger to her life…”

“Here’s the plan. Celebi isn’t with me right now. Once I retrieve Celebi, I’ll head to Sinnoh in a few days. I’ll examine her condition on-site and proceed from there.”

Dr. Berlitz quickly bowed. “Thank you so much.”

“And… about Rayquaza. On behalf of the Berlitz family, I offer our sincerest apologies…”

August said nothing. He nodded slightly, then ended the call.
