Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [292]

"Can’t catch a break for even a second, huh," August said, holding Eevee in his arms.

The Eevee nestled against him was still sulking over what had happened earlier. Not even August’s signature head pats—which usually had it melting—could coax it into forgiving him. It turned its head away, determined to ignore him.

Seeing Eevee’s little tantrum, August chuckled and deliberately withdrew his hand.
Eevee, who had been secretly enjoying the attention despite pretending to snub him, immediately sensed the absence of touch and grew nervous.

Wait… is he mad? Did I go too far?

Its ears twitched anxiously. Eevee sneaked a glance at August from the corner of its eye—

—only to be suddenly yanked up and smothered in his arms.

Bui! Bui!

Its paw pads pushed against August’s chest in protest, but honestly, it looked more like a reluctant cuddle than an actual attempt to escape.

Their antics drew a look from Gardevoir nearby.

"Hmm? Gardevoir, you want a hug too?" August nudged Eevee aside, making room for her and stretching out his arm invitingly.

Gardevoir: “....”

She glanced at Eevee, then made a face of disdain and turned away.

August shook his head.

She’s perfect in every way... except for how shy she is.

Good thing he didn’t say that out loud. If someone heard him, they’d definitely roast him.

Gardevoir isn’t shy—you’re just a creep!

Setting Eevee on his head, August pulled out his phone and sent a message to Blue.

Not long after, Blue came hurrying down from upstairs.

“August, are you really heading to Sinnoh right now? We haven’t even finished compiling intel on Team Galactic yet...” she said.

This was different from what they’d planned. It all felt too sudden.

“It’s not really about Team Galactic… okay, it’s kind of related,” August admitted. “But the main reason I’m going is to help someone.”

He briefly explained the situation with the Berlitz family and Platinum.

“And since I’m going, I figured I might as well get a feel for the situation on the ground—Blue?”

Blue had zoned out at the words "Sinnoh’s wealthiest family" and "heiress". Snapping back to attention, she said, “Ah? Oh—got it!”

August wasn’t entirely sure she did get it.

Anyway...

“I’m off to find Celebi and Mew… Mew’s not even answering my messages. Did it lose the communicator I gave it?”

Muttering, August called for Gardevoir and headed out to look for Mew, leaving Blue standing there, deep in thought.

...

The Tree of Beginning lay nestled in the mountain range north of Mt. Moon.

Nearby sat the Kingdom of Rota, with an architectural style that looked completely out of place in Kanto or Johto.

Arriving discreetly atop his Salamence, August took in the towering form of the Tree with curiosity.

This was Mew’s home, but he’d never been here in person.

Despite being called a "tree," the Tree of Beginning was more like a massive lifeform composed of rock and crystal, sustained by absorbing energy from sunlight.

As Salamence descended, August recalled it to its Poké Ball. He debated whether to head inside or call Mew out when—

BOOM!

A thunderous sound ripped through the air. A group of scruffy men tumbled out of a nearby tunnel in a panic.

How did August know at a glance that they were Pokémon hunters?

Occupational hazard from being a ranger.

Even from hundreds of meters away, he could smell that familiar stench.

“So, a bunch of poachers trying to raid the Tree of Beginning?” August narrowed his eyes.

The Tree was home to a large number of rare fossil Pokémon. These guys had probably come for them.

But since they’d run into him...

Grinning, August reached for a Poké Ball, about to help Mew out and deal with the trespassers—when he noticed something odd.

The hunters weren’t just panicked. They looked terrified.

Next second—

BEEP—BEEP—

A heavy thud shook the ground as something massive emerged from the tunnel.

A colossal Pokémon over ten meters tall, made of gray and orange stone, with a pattern of seven orange dots in an H-shape across its head, came into view.

Regirock—the Titan of Rock.

Now that looked like a legendary titan. The anime’s 1.7 meters? What a joke.

The poachers had clearly encountered it before August did.

Their terrified faces said it all. They’d barely entered the Tree, caught a few Pokémon—and this thing had immediately locked onto them. Now it had chased them outside.

Regirock's dot-face showed no expression.

It raised its massive stone arms—and slammed them down with immense force.

BOOM!

The ground cracked beneath the blow.

The poachers, experienced as they were, instantly released their Flying-type Pokémon and took to the skies.

Most dodged the attack—except their truck, parked nearby and loaded with cages. It tipped over from the shockwave.

Cages burst open, and dozens of captured wild Pokémon scrambled to freedom.

“Damn it—take it down!” one of the poachers yelled.

From the sky, they launched a barrage of attacks—[Hydro Pump], [Hyper Beam], [Thunderbolt], [Bullet Seed]...

They struck Regirock with considerable force, shattering chunks of its rocky body.

For a moment, the hunters froze in surprise. Then their faces lit up.

They’d been too afraid to fight it earlier—but now that they’d actually damaged it...

If it bleeds, we can beat it.

Maybe they could capture this Pokémon no one had seen before.

That’s when they missed the glow on the seven dots atop Regirock’s head.

Chunks of rock rose from the ground and reattached to its body, seamlessly repairing the damage.

Then—

Regirock raised its arm and flung it.

CRASH!

A storm of boulders shot into the air, aimed at the airborne poachers.

They didn’t stand a chance.

Screams and cries filled the air as both hunters and their Pokémon plummeted to the ground.

August watched the chaos unfold. Thinking it was over, he was about to return his Poké Ball and go say hello to Regirock—maybe ask it to take him to Mew.

BEEP—BEEP BEEP—

Regirock suddenly turned its gaze toward him.

It was hard to tell from its dot-face, but it didn’t look friendly.

Why are you looking at me like that? I’m not a poacher...

August thought silently.

But Regirock didn’t care.

It hefted another boulder and hurled it directly at him.

WHOOOOOSH!

The massive rock hurtled toward August with a whistle of air.

Just before impact—

FWUMP!

A flash of white light—Gardevoir materialized in front of him and stopped the boulder midair with psychic energy.

“Hey, we’re on the same side here. I’m friends with Mew,” August said.

He’d just been spectating! Talk about getting caught in the crossfire.

But Regirock wasn’t listening. It grabbed another rock and prepared to throw.

August sighed.

I’m literally just here to find Mew, how did I end up on Regirock’s hit list?

He nodded at Gardevoir.

In a flash, her eyes gleamed blue. The suspended rock trembled—and shot back toward Regirock.

BANG!

The titan stumbled, its arm crumbling into rubble.

But it quickly pulled in more rocks to repair itself, good as new.

A self-repairing tank, August thought.

He gave up on trying to beat it.

This was Mew’s security system—he couldn’t exactly catch it.

No point wasting time here.

He signaled Gardevoir again. With a [Psycho Cut], she sliced off part of Regirock’s arm.

“Let’s go!”

As Regirock paused to repair itself, August and Gardevoir flew deeper into the Tree.

By the time the titan lumbered after them, they were long gone.

...

Inside, the Tree of Beginning was vast—a maze of tunnels and crystal-lined halls.

Along the way, August saw countless crystal structures, and an unusual number of wild Pokémon—mostly fossil types.

Aerodactyls, Omastars, Kabutops... all rare elsewhere, but seemingly common here.

Not that August cared. He just wanted to find Mew.

But before he could, another Pokémon blocked his path.

BEEP BEEP—BEEP—BEEP—

A massive silver Pokémon appeared, its body spherical and metallic, with seven red dots blinking in the center of its head.

“Registeel—the Titan of Steel!”

As if in greeting, Registeel raised its shining claw and brought it down in a blur.

[Metal Claw]

August and Gardevoir teleported out of the way instantly.

CRASH!

The claw smashed into a crystal wall behind them, effortlessly splintering a structure over three meters tall.

That triggered a chain reaction.

The green glow of the crystals turned red.

Scarlet liquid oozed from the shattered shards, coalescing into Pokémon-like forms and lunging at August.

According to the movie, these were the Tree’s white blood cells—defense mechanisms to purge intruders.

But...

Having barely dodged Registeel’s attack, August stared in disbelief.

“...?”

Seriously? I didn’t even hit anything—Registeel did! Why are you coming after me?

With no time to complain, he had Gardevoir fend off the red crystal creatures while releasing his second Pokémon.

“Mewtwo!”

He hadn’t brought Rayquaza this time—but Mewtwo, Mew’s “good son,” had come along.

Mewtwo emerged just in time to see Registeel charging at him with frightening speed.

[Heavy Slam]

Unfazed, Mewtwo narrowed his eyes. He gripped his spoon, now glowing with psychic energy, and struck.

BOOM!

A thunderous crash echoed through the tunnel, making August’s skull rattle.

Mewtwo held his ground. As expected of the one who had defeated Rayquaza—even without [Mega Evolution] or [Plate] enhancements.

Registeel, while powerful, was no Rayquaza.

The titan’s massive form was knocked into the wall, half its body embedded in stone.

August eyed it carefully—no visible damage.

“.....”

Registeel is a literal tank, while Regirock crumbles like cookies...

If he remembered correctly, the Tree’s guardians included one more: Regice.

As that thought crossed his mind, a chill crept down his spine.

He turned—

And found Regice had somehow appeared silently behind him.

Its entire body was made of jagged ice, exuding an aura of piercing cold that seemed to freeze even the soul.

The yellow cross of dots on its face flashed. Then, without hesitation, it raised its arm.

A swirling blue orb formed in front of it.

Registeel’s metallic body began glowing, forming a silver cannon of light.

And from the tunnel behind—Regirock reappeared, arm raised, surrounded by boulders infused with primal energy.

[Ice Beam]. [Flash Cannon]. [Ancient Power].

All three Titans fired at once.

Even with Mewtwo and Gardevoir protecting him, August’s expression darkened.

He grabbed Mewtwo and shouted to Gardevoir: “[Teleport]!”

The moment they vanished—

BOOOOM!!!

The three attacks collided and erupted in a massive explosion that engulfed the entire corridor.

Having barely escaped, August exhaled and patted his chest.

No time to rest. Without pause, he and his Pokémon raced toward the Tree’s core, guided by his [Aura].
